Former MPs brother charged with procuring girls

A former MP’s elder brother has been arrested over allegations that he was linked to a North-based prostitution gang that lured hill-tribal girls into the flesh trade via social media. He maintained that he was innocent and would testify only on court.

The 65-year-old Boonyasit Rungthanakiat was arrested at a Bangkok hotel’s car park, as police responded to an arrest warrant issued by the Chiang Mai court on June 12. Charges include human trafficking and procuring girls under 18 into prostitution. The arrest was announced in a Friday press conference at Bangkok’s Crime Suppression Division.

Boonyasit is the elder brother of former Pheu Thai Party’s Surin MP Kasem Rungthanakiat.

The arrest stemmed from discovery of three sex workers aged under 18 during a March search operation of “So Nice” karaoke bar in Chiang Mai’s Muang district by the Provincial Police Region 5 officers and Social Development and Human Security Ministry officials.

A police probe then found seven additional karaoke bar branches in Chiang Mai under the helm of Boonyasit that allegedly committed similar offences.

The operation had netted six suspects while Boonyasit eluded police until they learned he was laying low in Bangkok and arrested him this week.

The gang allegedly lured hill-tribal girls or migrant workers via social media with a promise of a job paying as high as Bt50,000 monthly, and them forced them to instead provide sex services.

Police expect Boonyasit to be sent to Chiang Mai’s Mae Ping Police Station as legal actions proceed.

the extra fun to these types of rancid stories is the excuses of the accused

In plain English, based on the information contained in this report, it would seem as if Boonyasit is nothing more than a well-connected pimp.

Or is that too harsh?

...........Boonyasit is the elder brother of former Pheu Thai Party’s Surin MP...........

Aaaah. Those stalwarts of decency.

Woo doesn't take much to catch you does it. Unfortunately everybody else far to clever to fall for it.

Those Chiang Mai karaoke bars are complete scams on par with the Jetski scams of Pattaya and should all be put out of business and closed down.

He lured the girls with a promise of a job paying as high as Bt50,000 monthly. What kind of job was he offering? Because I sure don`t think the girls were expecting to earn that type of salary as waitresses in a coffee shop.

Girls under the age of 18. What does that mean? How much under the age of 18 were they?  Lots missing from this report and we are only receiving the tail end of it.

Poor guy obviously had a low paid job himself and just wanted to make a bit on the side ?????

And occupation of brother is relevant how?

Wouldn't be surprised if both were in on it.

Then reporter should say.

Yes, nothing like Democrat Party stalwart and talisman Chuan Leekpai's brother, who allegedly embezzled billions from a Thai bank, and ran away to Taiwan until the statute of limitations expired.

And nothing like the PTP owner, controller, and paymaster, Yingluck's brother, who has some serious court cases waiting, such as the infamous Krunghai bank fraud;  or the use of Thai taxpayer money to lend out to a military regime so they can buy from his family firm etc etc etc.

But he's smarter than the rest. He still owns and controls a political party.

Of course even if he waits out the statute of limitations on all those serious cases, he still can't come back because of the outstanding conviction and sentence. Oh, and the little matter of jumping bail. Not now the amnesty fiasco failed.

We can play this game with lots and lots more politicians if you like?

Or be sensible and accept politics is riddled with undesirable elements.

Those of us who have brothers will know that it is most unfortunate that any bad things they do can cause us embarrassment.

Our Prime Minister will surely empathise.

most be some mistake. He will counter claim this soon with defamation charge.Chiang Mai its karaoke joints always have been top notch.

He wouldn't dare. Surprised the brother made the news.

It's just hard to believe one of them is involved and the other one has morals and passed on this cash cow.

Not good journalist standards. It invites speculation which you just proved.

Japanese guy took me to a Chiang Mai Karaoke joint years ago before the proliferation. Pretty good evening on the Johnny Black, amazing service with very pretty girls (nothing sexual), but recall his bill was pretty hefty.

From what I remember also plenty of underage Hill Tribe boys in Chiang Mai, must be a different ring running that one I guess...

It's unusual for a Thai official not to have a 12 or 13 year old mia noi or gig.

They are all at it. Part of the culture here.
