DLT to issue driver's licenses on Smart Card in Chiang Mai next month

CHIANG MAI, 18 August 2017 (NNT) – Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Office will begin to issue driver's licenses on Smart Card which can prevent counterfeiting early next month.

Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transport Official Chanchai Keelapang said the office will issue the driver's licenses in the form of Smart Card from 4 September 2017.

The new driver's license will implement modern technology such as a magnetic stripe and QR code, and support the use of application to read the driver's information for the purposes of road safety management.

The Department of Land Transport will no longer issue the traditional paper licenses from 15 August 2017. The Smart Card will not incur any costs in addition to the current fee, he said.

Traditional paper licenses issued before 15 August 2017 will remain valid until their expiry date. Smart Cards can replace damaged, lost and expired licenses.

Surprised that CM DLT have been issuing paper licenses at all during recent years. BKK DLT ceased issuing paper licenses at least 9 years ago, in favour of the plastic magnetic strip licence.

A mighty blown up story by the DLT.

The only news that I see compared to my DLs is the QR code.

Over so many years I never saw one of the antique paper licenses.

And also it is unlikely a CM specific thing.

Another thread exists which has gone a bit astray.

MY wife has a lifetime DL Issued by CNX DLT in 2007. It's paper. A short time afterwards all DLT offices  throughout Thailand stopped issuing lifetime dl at the same time the smart dl came into play. I personally know of two foreigners that have lifetime  dl's paper.

I got my licenses two years ago and they are plastic, what's the point of this article?

Clickbait. Outta here!

Just pay 200b when you are caught without a license.....its good for 7 days. Why bother with formalities?

A few days ago, I extended my former 2-year DL (plastic card with magnetic stripe) from DLT Banglamung  to a 5-year DL at DLT Chiangmai:

same as the plastic card from Banglamung, except a small panda logo in the right corner.

It seems, the only change will be the addition of a QR code.

It is not modern technology, and it's not smart~sorry
