Another poster gave me an idea.  Not sure it has been done.  Looking for pics of interesting out of the way places hidden in CM.  If done before, please don't flame me, just point me in the right direction.

Start at Chiang Mai or Thapae Gate, and head into the old city. Explore the back sois. Take a day to do it.

Also, walk around the old city. Used to be able to climb the wall on the corners, but signs have been put up banning it, unfortunately.

Restaurants almost everywhere, so meals and snacks no problem.

 

Along the Ping from Wanarot market south is interesting. Take a river cruise from the Wat. Google Ping River cruises.

 

Take a blue songtheaw from Wanarot market to Lamphun and back. Very old temple in Lamphun, and some nice restaurants on the river. A samlor driver will be happy to take you on a tour.

 

Royal Flora worth a day. The wat on the hill near the Royal Flora is better, IMO, that Doi Suthep.

Nice ideas but decrying the ban on climbing ancient artifacts is a bit bad. This is history that can be easily destroyed.

The bricks are NOT old. The corner walls are a reconstruction using bricks from last century.

Also not possible to damage them merely by walking on them.

If they care so much, why don't they take more care of it? The excavation site is a disgrace.

Beyond Doing Suthep is a palace Bhubing www.bhubingpalace.org

  Grand Canyon is cool and I agree Royal Flora,  Erotic Garden in the Mae Rim  both well worth visiting. Along the way to Mae Rim is the Mountain People Village and a nice Elephant retirement park.

If you take the road to Mae On and head for San Kamphaeng Hot Springs, there is a road going to the Alpine Golf course. Bear left and it will take you to a sacred place under a dam. There's a well there, the Thais think the water has magical powers.

Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens and it's newish canopy walkway, 3.5 kms beyond Mae Sa elephant camp.

And then on to Mon Chem,  which is up in the hills beyond QSBG on the loop road back to CM, via Hang Dong.

Faces Restaurant and The Clay Studio Cafe.  A block into the old city from the south side of the moat.  A bit of quiet paradise in the midst of the insanity.  Highly recommend.

Sweet Garden, north of town near Raumchok Mall area.  Another oasis that you wouldn't know is there if you didn't go in.   Dont forget to buy a bag of fish food for ten baht.  Giant carp and catfish battle the geese for it.

Anna Farm and Eatery.  In Mae Sa, up the hills left from Mae Rim.  Very quiet because most people stop at the popular Sala Cafe before it.  Tucked into a nice corner of nature.  The honey toast is a meal in itself.  Turn left on leaving and in 100 meters you come to a meditation center that's not on maps with some really incredible nagas and sculptures.

Taweechol Garden, on the road to DoiSaket, about two km before DoiSaket. Look for the big orange roof on the left. The gardens are fabulous, with amazing topiary, orchids everywhere, bromeliads, a desertscape, peacocks, swans, ostriches, and deer that will eat out of your hand. Take a swimsuit and enjoy the pool. Get lost in the labyrinth. The museum has weapons and old soldiers' clothes, and hundred-year-old photos of Chiang Mai. They're planning to add KhanToke performances this cool season.

The original bricks were used during WW ll to build roads by the Japanese during their occupation of Thailand ( or Siam as it was called then). Hence the reconstructions. I wouldn't mind seeing photos of the original wall around the city.
