"Big Joke" out late this morning busting teens at snooker and drinking clubs in Bangkok

It was a late night for the head of special branch Surachet Hakpan as he led his 191 men and police from Pahonyothin station on raids at snooker and drinking clubs.

The cops at Pahonyothin had called for back-up to help deal with underage drinking and illicit clubs in the area so Surachet - known in the Thai media as Big Joke - lent a hand.

They raided two places in Ngam Wong Wan Road Soi 60 namely Lap-Republic and Na Bang Khen.

Well after midnight at Lap republic there were still 173 people out enjoying themselves and 45 of those were found to be under 20 years of age.

Manager Chanathip Chusringam, 24, was slapped with four charges - no license to operate, serving alcohol out of hours, encouraging alcohol sales and serving minors.

At Na Bang Khen Sunee Uthaporn, 29, was found to be the manageress. She was charged with operating out of hours.

Both managers were taken into the station at Pahonyothin while the under age drinkers were rounded up and their parents were contacted to pick them up.

Manager reported that Big Joke and his raiding party then went in search of further miscreants in the area.

Thaivisa notes that "Joke" in Thai is the word for rice gruel that many locals like to eat for breakfast.

I didn't realise the nickname was restricted to the one policeman ! :passifier:

That nick name should be used by all the RTP, because they are all a BIG joke. :cheesy:

Focus on what's important!  191 Policemen charge into the night and their motto?:  "how dare they enjoy themselves - it's no joke!"

Outrageous, people out after midnight enjoying themselves!!

Why can't the police check all the bars in their districts to see if they have proper operating licenses ? It seems that most of the time when they have raids there s no license !

191 policeman, led by the commander of the police Special Branch.

Now wouldn't you expect Special Branch to be more engaged on other types of activities the raiding after hours and underage boozing? Like some very "topical" activities for instance?

I should have thought they would have more success practicing their parachuting skills by making HALO jumps at night onto the targeted nightclubs and bars.......

Find something useful to do for heaven's sake.

No ! No! And No!

Lost in translation again.

He may well be a "joke" be it a bowl of of rice gruel (thin rice porridge) or something that makes you laugh, but is sad that is what they spend the night shift doing.

Had it not been for the nickname this would not be newsworthy...

:saai:

Say Goodbye to the Thailand we knew as it is being strangled to death sterilized by a self centered egotistical neurotic ..................

Hi holy cow,

Are you not a bit over the top,

The onus is on the owner/ manager to ensure that they have the correct current operating licences & they are not expensive (under 2,000 Bht a year).

In addition any alcohol selling operation targeting under aged patrons have to have rocks in their head,

What is annoying is the "police assessment" of how busy a place is (they only visit on Friday & Saturdays when the place is busy) & then demand an increase in the brown envelope collection along

with all the late night illegal liquor carts set up after midnight who will sell to anybody with no regard to underage, licence, toilet facilities, security  etc, which is why parts of Sukhumvit small like a sewer.

There has to be a lot of "commission" in these carts for the cartel in uniform

A good point, but the "cart bars" have gone now.

The licensing has always been a joke. They can always find an infringement if they want to.

You are completely correct in saying the brown envelopes they demand are only judged on busy days no matter what the meticulous bookkeeping that they require states.

Bars etc just get raided to make money, as they open somewhere else having sold on to new management, or even in the same place within a week or two.

It is all part of the police corruption problem.

(Thaksin was a prime user of police corruption and it made him mega rich.)

What is being done to sort it out?

Nothing, as the rest are at the trough too!

That's very nearly what I just wrote - I was looking for an editing option that would allow me to put a line through names and write bribes after it instead 555

Looks like someone stole one of the coppers shoulders while he wasn't looking.

Hi natway09 . No, I think not in the big picture of how Thailand is being changed only as a certain person's will wants it, and the boot lickers who want to be noticed in the admin. No different from Putin and the gays, sort of.                                                                                                                                        Strangulation is a slow death to have as his method of his reform. Slowly but surely we should nick name him Mr. Python. I like the old frontier of Thais for the Thailand I remember. I think he said something like: Don't make a Statue for me.. blah blah blah. They won't. Ego based self righteous person. Then again Genghis Kahn was also that way.
