Register sons birth with the UK

Featured Replies

I want to register my sons birth with the UK authorities - We live in Thailand

1. My son is 4 years old (July 2013)
2. Father British (Born British in the UK) Mother Thai
3. Parents were married in 2004
4. Do I need to fill out a form MN1 and send to UK or is he   British already and all I have to do is apply for a   passport for him?

Any info or advice would be great. I did this 12 years ago with my eldest son, but it has all changed.

Your son is automatically British. You can apply for a UK passport for him any time you want.

You can go through the process of registering his birth with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the UK, but it will cost well over 10,000 baht and you will not receive a British birth certificate.

Instead you will receive a consular registration form that isn't much good for anything really.

Yes, you only need to apply for a UK passport. There is no need to register him.

I went the registration route 15 years ago from Thailand - It cost 14K Baht back then and is unnecessary! - I did however get a British Long Birth Certificate at the time.

You are correct though it is not needed and seems just a money maker for the Brit. Consul.
