It's almost as if paying for a bride is a seriously flawed and bad idea.

I'm pretty sure the old saying 'you can't buy love' is a universal truth.

Wasn't in Farang land up until the recent past. The only difference was that it was the bride's parents who paid for the wedding ( which was/is quite a hefty sum).

If you think someone with a pixelated face is beautiful then I guess its not hard to work out your favourite form of viewing.

Since when is there an engagement Sin Sod? Isn't It usually part of the marriage ceremony.

No, it's presented at the engagement ceremony. The formal process is the groom and family go the house of the bride and present the dowry to her parents. Then the parents give permission to marry and the groom fetches the bride and then the rest of the ceremony starts.

Wow you are happy for scammers to get away with scamming people. Are you an African prince ?

He is a factory worker and that's 2 or 3 months wages. Would you be happy to lose that.

And how nice to know there are some Thai people who don't care bout 'face'.

I am with you, bring them down, let them spend a few years in Bangkok's finest accommodation I say, well done young man, let us hope this experience is helpful in the future for you and others.

In all fairness cigarettes, cigars, pipes, knives, guns, alcohol, etc... are pixilated these days in Thailand.

Would have been better saving face, and saying nothing, instead of getting the police involved !

scamming desperate people out of their money is pretty easy!... when you are desperate you are almost willing to believe anything if you think it will get you want you want.

a fool and his money are soon parted

I have very little sympathy for people who dont have enough common sense to spot an obvious con!!!

And he believed he could "marry" a pretty one for the laughable sum of 50'000 Baht.

I have a few questions.

Why did he need a place to stay so desperately?

He meets her and 2 weeks later he wants to marry her?

He did not have any friends or family that could talk to him or he could stay with?

This guy seems to be strange.  He can not find a place to stay does not have the money for a room but can afford 50k.  Just seems strange.

Standard practice in Thailand, among the respectable classes. Groom should offer a kilo of gold for the bride, reasoning that she'll move away and produce children, her parents losing a daughter. These days, the trick is to rent the gold for the ceremony, then return it.

This fellow was a fool and he paid for it. However, his suggestion to move in before marriage was improper. He was punished.

Par for the course.

If you live in a country where even the highly educated start off making about $500 US/month you start looking for alternative means to make a quick buck...  In general Thai people are pretty trustworthy and honest but there will always be those who commit shady crimes that make the headlines which makes it appear the problem is rampart and common.

Right. The whole story is fishy. Normally both sides'  parents would meet and "size each other up" if it's serious. There's more to it.

You've been away. Highly educated Thais are pulling Bt100 -125, 000/mth ($3000-4000). The factory worker, maybe Bt 20,000/mth.

I don't know or have ever heard of anyone who just graduated start off with that kind of salary! haha...

Not sure what you consider to be "highly educated" but I consider an engineer to be pretty damn educated! and according to this on average the salary appears to be about $ 756/month

Granted this is for 2005 but i don't think it has changed that drastically over the last 12 years.
