Local villagers tried hard on Tuesday to rescue a young wild elephant that had become stuck in mud in a canal after apparently being caught up in a flash flood in Phitsanulok’s Noen Maprang district.

The animal, believed to be a male, is thought to be from Thung Salang Luang National Park, where it may have become detached from its mother.

The young elephant, which was found almost totally submerged in Chompu Canal in the morning, was able to breathe by raising its trunk above the water.

By the afternoon, however, it appeared to be tired after being stuck in the muddy waterway for many hours.

Charnwit Sangsoi, chief of Tham Patapon animal protection zone, said the elephant may have been caught up in the flooding that was blanketing the area, and could have been rushed down the canal by the strong current.

Lieng Nuamoun, a 60-year-old former mahout, volunteered to try to get a rope on the animal in an attempt to get it out of the water.

However, the elephant seemed to respond angrily and used its trunk to beat the water, resulting in Lieng having to give up his attempt.

As of press time, the attempts to rescue the stranded pachyderm were still ongoing.

Park rangers and veterinarians are on Wednesday morning trying to rescue a 10-year-old wild elephant after it was swept away and trapped in strong current of a canal at Thung Saleng Luang national park in Nern Maplang district of Phitsanulok province.

The elephant was stranded in the Klong Chompoo canal since yesterday and until today it is still in the water.

Yesterday park officials used a heavy machinery to level the slope of the bank so it could walk out. However it was too exhausted and was unable to make it to the bank.

Rescuers save young elephant caught in canal

A young male elephant was rescued on Wednesday after being stuck in muddy canal close to a national park for about 26 hours in Phitsanulok’s Nuenmaprang district.

The animal was pulled out of the water and onto the canal bank about noon. However, it appeared to be exhausted and just lay on the ground after having stood in the strong current of the canal for so long. Officials and rescuers kept villagers away from the elephant to make it feel more relaxed.

A vet treated the elephant with drugs and examined its body, finding no injuries. By later in the day the elephant was able to move its trunk, and raise its legs and tail from time to time, but could not stand up. Vets continued to keep a close watch on the animal.

The elephant was spotted in Chompu canal at about 11am on Tuesday. Villagers alerted police and officials of Thungsalangluang National Park. All authorities in the province, as well as civilian networks, joined hands to help the animal.

The elephant was believed to live in Thungsalangluang National Park where it may have become separated from its mother. It may have been pushed into the canal by flash flooding.

Attempts to rescue the elephant on Tuesday failed because of the strong current and the animal’s unwillingness to be helped.

However, the rescue was achieved on Wednesday when the animal was exhausted from being in the canal the whole night.
