Thirty university students from the Youth Network Against New Drinkers on Thursday urged Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha as head of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to prevent Central Nakhon Ratchasima mall’s beer garden from opening in December.

Theerapat Khahawong, coordinator of the network, which has pushed for a ban on alcohol sales near academic institutions for years, said the mall had asked the provincial governor to review the alcohol-free zoning near academic institutions by citing economic reasons.

As a result, authorities have considering allowing new businesses selling alcohol at the mall.

Theerapat said the mall, built after NCPO order No 22/2558 banned alcohol licences to new business operators in alcohol-free zones, opened last Friday and announced a beer garden would be opened in December based on confidence that the provincial government would approve the request.

The network urged state officials to summon mall representatives to explain about their case.

Theerapat claimed that if the province bent to the business’s request, students at three academic institutions in the area, Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University, Rajamangala University of Technology Isan, and Vongchavalitkul University, would be at risk.

If the zoning exception was allowed, other business would also seek to open new venues selling alcohol, undermining the NCPO order, he said.

What's wrong with these people ? A few beers while being a student is normal in the rest of the world.

Of course I'm forgetting that this is Thailand which has nothing to do with the rest of the world.

Here we have hookers peddling their asses on every corner, kids off their heads on yabba but the main problem is a few beers.

they are young people looking for a just cause to make noise which is all fine and good if they pick the right one(s)

if they don't like drinking beer ......................... don't drink it

If they really want to make an impact on Thai society and be heard about something worthwhile well they could start with the carnage on the roads or the massive corruption - those are both worth shouting about

from what i see in many towns they are bars for students and they are always full.drinking beer or whisky.a farang is not really welcome unless you speak thai, even then no one may talk to you.also they have selling rules in bars  or 7/11 during the day if you are near a school

Farangs contradict themselves, I see some on this forum say it's ok and I see on the forum farangs saying young Thais students are drinking and taking yaba is really getting out of hand in Thailand.

So 2 kinds of farangs the good ones and the bad ones. Of course the bad ones are the <deleted> who drink too much and don't see why selling beers near a school is bad and they even say those students shouldn't protest.

Outstanding. Prayut brought in this rule. According to him the economy is roaring ahead. The mall was built after the rule was enacted.

It's an interesting test. No doubt a Thai solution will be found, but it shouldn't.

We never eat cookies because they have yeast,
And one little bite turns a man to a beast.
Oh, can you imagine the utter disgrace
Of a man in the gutter with crumbs on his face?
Chorus:
Away, away, with rum, by gum,
Rum by gum, rum by gum
Away, away, with rum, by gum,
The song of the Temperance Union.
