I wasn't saying (and don't think anyone else has said) the entire Province was RUDE.  I was merely questioning that the day to day interaction with Thais in Phuket is much less friendly than in Chaing Mai, Issan, or even Bangkok.  And I was curious as to other opinions.

Perhaps you should check again who my post was directed at.

Past 5 years living and working in Phuket 6 months of the year, past 18 years visiting and spending time in Phuket

Have not had the same impression as the OP - once in a blue moon I come across someone who has perhaps had a bad day, but that occurs in several countries I work in around the region.

On the contrary - I perceive the folks in Phuket as I do elsewhere - their attitude reflects mine.  Wondering if the OP possibly brings the attitude with them...

"Past 5 years living and working in Phuket 6 months of the year, past 18 years visiting and spending time in Phuket" - same question.  Where else have you been in Thailand to compare Phuket to?

Not saying this is the case with you AT, but a lot of expats in Thailand seem to boast about how long they have been "here" as if it should command respect for superior knowledge of all things Thai.

After a little questioning, it turns out many have only left their Southern Thailand tourist area for visits to Issan, and they haven't been anywhere else in Thailand, let alone the region.

Whilst these people may know "their patch" quite well, they can offer no advice, general or specific, on any other parts of Thailand, or any neighboring countries.

So, that leads me to a question I have for members who have posted on this thread, "When is the last time you left Phuket Province, and thus be able to compare the said Thai attitude on Phuket, to other parts of Thailand?

Split my time between Phuket and Chiang Mai - live in Thailand full time.  Also live in Bangkok part time several years ago before moving to Thailand perm.

I've been to Chiang Mai several times.  Admittedly, the longest I have stayed there, on any particular visit, was only for 1 month.

However, in my opinion, I definitely found the Lanna people more friendly.

Unfortunately, no beach there though.

Currently out of Phuket until next week, I travel to and spend time in various provinces in Central and Southern Thailand regularly, plus regular stays in Bangkok.

Oddly the one place I haven't been is Isaan -  as per your reference.

I agree with the OP I think Phuket is the worst place by far in this country for attitudes, rip offs, over pricing, mafia,

lady time/attitudes, food prices, on and on.

I will never go back.  I know they don't care as I don't care.

A lot of my expat friends have left for CM over the past 9 years. They have never regretted it. My wife, local Phuket, has said most of the Thais in Phuket are from Nakon Sri Thamarat and they are the most rude and surly. They tend to gang up when working together at hotels.

Some of the hotel owners I consult with always tell me that HR makes sure there are less than %40 of them or trouble brews.

A lot of local Thais are tired of other Thais. Anyways, still their country.

Personally, I get bad service at a local joint, I never go back.

Agreed totally about what you wrote regarding Southern Thai's in Phuket, rude, surely and potentially very dangerous, my four years in Phuket taught me that lesson the hard way.

Not true, we have a beach at a local dam and it's very nice, all the beach trimmings without the salt.

Wise decision.

Phuket is not really the place for the naïve nor anyone needing to count pennies.

Oops, my bad attitude just slipped out.

I'm sure that you will be sorely missed.   In context, Phuket is more than the resort towns, and no matter where you go in Thailand, if it is tourist orientated, there will be a premium to pay.

Phuket of course is a province, albeit a small one, with a multitude of different places to sample.   Even within what could be considered 'tourist' areas, there are venues that offer value and quality at not unreasonable prices.   A week or so spent in Patong really can't be considered as an insight to Phuket.

Again, getting it into context, this forum is primarily for Phuket based expats, nearly all of whom avoid the traps and connivances of the tourist areas like the plague, and as such we tend to comment/share advice on it's merits as a place to live and not to holiday.

As an expat resident, Phuket has virtually everything one could need for a good lifestyle.  Lots of markets with local produce, Western orientated supermarkets, quiet areas not frequented by tourists, great views around every corner, an international airport no more that one hour from anywhere in the island, great standard of medical facilities, and when you live here and frequent different establishments, consistently friendly reception from everyone.

Bottom line is that it is very easy to live a hassle free and pleasant life in Phuket, just another one of life's choices.

Naive is not knowing what a rip off place it is and being ok with getting fleeced.

As mentioned previously, up to you. You want to hang in the tourist areas, go for it.

Most Expats avoid those areas like the plague.

Naïve is someone who comes on to an expat forum to throw manure at a place and be surprised when the locals, who choose to live there, react.

Naïve is someone who doesn't know the difference between a tourist town and a whole province.

Naïve is someone who gets caught up in mafia tourist scams despite several years as a member of a forum where scams are widely discussed.

Naïve is someone who thinks Pattaya is the best place in Thailand to live.

I went to the popular resorts a few times when I first came to LOS with prices starting at 500 baht for one plate of food.  Didn't take me five minutes to find out where the Thais were eating and drinking.

If I had to deal with nasty drunk Russians, pushy rude Chinese, cheap charlie Indians, English chavs and American know it alls, I can imagine being a little surly and unfriendly.  Patong is a dump, full of garbage and if I never set foot there again I will be happy.  Lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas

Indeed, probably far better to just stay in Issan and only have to deal with warm and cuddly Khmer types.

Agree, same anywhere in the world and a fact of life!

Agree again and I often comment om my friendly Italian restaurant where I can get a main course for the equivalent of around NZ$12.00, and if I wanted to eat more cheaply there are some local Thai places where the food is good.

That's why I have lived here for 11 years, and sure I moan about the poor infrastructure and the lack of brains in the so-called town planners (and the lo-so Chinese hordes) but I do realise that it has been the same in other places that are "growing" (remember the Costa Brava).

In addition I have friends here, both farang and Thai and I enjoy the vibrancy of the place, and when the low season comes around I am happiest.

I have travelled much in my lifetime and am currently sending this from a wet New Zealand, and I can't wait to get back to Patong, which is where I will probably spend the rest of my life (with some visits to other places).

As Pagallim has said, "Bottom line is that it is very easy to live a hassle free and pleasant life in Phuket".

Very few busloads or plane loads of Khmers clogging the aisles at Big C here in Isaan my friend and even fewer jamming up the beaches.

Patong is a tourist trap as is Patts, but then we all came to Thailand for different reasons.  I'm glad you have found a lifestyle that fulfills your needs, I have

Relax Old Croc you seem to be taking it so personally.

Its about a place, not you.

The thread is about Phuket/Patong.

Not some back road hut where you buy 20 b soup.

Phuket/ Patong=rip offs bad attitudes.

If you are looking for cheap ladies and cheap lady time and cheap everything else best stick to Pattaya with all the other addicted sexpats who cannot afford quality company, 28,000 waiting for your company there, bound to be some who get desperate and will give you a discount

I note Si Sa Ket has had 13 deaths this holiday period. It leads the nation at something!

I prefer the safety of Phuket to the craziness of far Isaan.

"best stick to Pattaya with all the other addicted sexpats who cannot afford quality company" - I didn't know you had to pay (afford) for "quality company" because if the company was "quality" there shouldn't be any payment involved.  Right????

So, are you paying for "quality company?"

Can you define "quality company" and give an indication of the price?

Does "quality company" give a monthly discount, and a "no sick buffalo" guarantee????

let's cut the bickering.

I mean no disrespect to Phuket residents, but I sadly have to confirm that as a Phuket tourist that went to touristy places in Phuket, I felt many of the locals were markedly less friendly than in other parts of Thailand.
