No laughing matter as "Big Joke" clears nitrous oxide, Viagra and Nigerians off the streets of Bangkok!

The 13th swoop of the Black Eagle task force proved unlucky for many in Bangkok yesterday as top scam-buster Surachet Hakpal reported the results of a good day's work.

Choosing the police station in the Khao San area of the capital deputy tourist police bureau commissioner Surachet - known as Big Joke in the Thai media - told the press about the latest arrests in three cases.

The first was the arrest of two Nigerian "Romance Scammers" preying on gullible Thai women on Facebook. Emeya Essay, 31, and Oliver Obriora, 44, pretended to be someone else as they conned a Khamphaeng Phet woman out of a million baht.

It was the usual story in such cases. After gaining the confidence and love of a woman they said they had sent gifts but money needed to be transferred to an account to secure their release from customs.

Other victims in the Kamphaeng Phet area are expected to come forward.

Emeya was nabbed with electronic evidence at the Regent Home Condo in Bang Na while his sidekick Oliver was taken down while attempting to flee the country at Don Meuang airport.

Money they obtained was laundered in the Pratunam area of Bangkok.

They were charged with computer fraud, false pretenses, illegal use of ATM cards and Oliver was on overstay too.

In a second series of cases 14 foreigners were rounded up in Bangkok and surrounding areas. Seven were illegals immigrants comprising five from India and one each from South Korea and Burma. Seven over stayers were also caught - four from Sri Lanka, two from India and an American.

Illegal and unregistered substances on sale in the Khao San party area of Bangkok were also part of the busts announced at the police station just yards from where tourists stay in their thousands.

Police seized 310 phials of nitrous oxide (laughing gas), six large canisters and 163 empty balloons. The gas had been sold openly in the street for tourists.

Also arrested were two Burmese women - Kanchana Mahawong, 38, and Mumchan - who were selling restricted drugs at two pharmacies in the area - T.P. Pharma nearby and T.P. in Khao San Road itself.

They had Valium, Alprazolam (Xanax), Viagra and steroids for sale, said the cops.

Good thing they got the nitrous off he streets though.

You can buy small canisters by the box at most grocery stores. It’s used to whip cream.

You know, I know but many don't.

One cartridge of  8 gram fills about 120 liter, about 60 balloons.

50 pcs at Makro around 600 THB.

Heard that they were offering 1 balloon for 400 THB on Kao San Rd.

Keep filling the brown envelopes as a 600 THB investment makes about 1.2 million THB !!!

I must be getting old and out of touch.  Nitrous Oxide?  I though that was used in dentists and to supercharge cars in Fast and Furious movies?

Does the name whippits bring it to life more for you? Teenage years had a lot at concerts and I'm in my 50's.

Its in the mail scam, is so old, one wonders if those who fall for it deserve to loose everything, as they are as stupid as stupid can be. These days it seems only to happen in this neck of the woods so says a lot about the place. Lack of education and government warnings. silly people

Some of it must have found its way into Government House. It would explain why so many of its decisions and observations make it the laughing stock of the world.

Public safety was my past profession. It is now the responsibility of others more qualified. As a long term "resident", I read and move on.

It's hard to see what some people find so (self-)amusing about items that were very clearly connected with the seized gas and were evidence that it was being sold in large quantities.

ok. wake up please as your name. this happens all over the world and your attacks should be at the scammers not the victims. your relentless whining about a country that you left because you didn't fit in really is tedious. "in this neck of the woods" you don't even live here. you realize how silly that is don't you? let it go. don't like it here then fine but you don't have to attack the place or the people, most of which are bloody nice, at every tiny chance you get
