Chiang Mai police made a quick arrest in the case of a husband and wife team who offered to take a stranded Swiss man home on Wednesday night.

He got on their bike in the downtown area but instead of taking him back to his hotel they stopped and grabbed his bag and a fight broke out before they fled the scene.

Only the intervention of another member of the public helped from making the matter worse.

Nathan, from Switzerland, went to police following the incident. He said he was the 5,000 meters champion at the European Championships, reported Sanook. He was into the third day of a Songkran holiday in Thailand.

CCTV footage confirmed that he was on the back of a motorcycle ridden by a man with a woman riding pillion too. He said they offered to see him safely home then attacked him in the street. He fought back and was then aided by another member of the public.

The thieves fled in the direction of San Sai.

Police soon discovered that the bike was registered to a woman called Tulaporn and she was arrested with her partner in crime Patanapong, 22.

Nathan reported that he was punched all over and had a Go-Pro camera in a bag taken. It was not recovered. He thanked police for their quick action and presented a bouquet of flowers to deputy national police chief Pol Gen Chalermkiat Sriworakhan who was on hand for a press photo.

Patanapong claimed that the Swiss man had promised to pay him 50 baht for the lift but when he wouldn't pay he got angry and decided to steal from him. He said that this was the first time he had done such a thing.

Police records proved otherwise. Muang district police said that he had a long history of snatch theft since he was a teenager.

Both thieves were charged with using a vehicle in the commission of theft and were detained.

Terrible isnt it?

Showing respect to someone representing an institution that has righted a wrong and restored your faith in a country and its citizens

Disgraceful.

It would never happen back in good old blighty or uncle sam etc.

" He said that this was the first time he had done such a thing."

" Muang district police said that he had a long history of snatch theft since he was a teenager."

So stupid ,he thought the police would not check, expect harsh punishment,as the Deputy

National Police chief has had to come and try and make amends for the thief.in the hope

that  the Chiang Mai tourist industry is not tainted ,by the thiefs actions, I think the Swiss

man would have prefered his Gopro back, instead of a bunch of flowers.

regards worgeordie

The victim doesn't look like Mo Farah to me. I suspect he is not the European 5000 metres champion and more like a Swiss version of Walter Mitty.

So if the police actually do their job that warrants a bouquet?

Do you hand one over every time the checkout girl at Tesco hands you the right change?

You cant reason with pseudo-Thais who think they are more Thai than Thais  lol.  Would this guy do that in his own country?  something fishy going on here and can't find our Nathan re winning the 5000 meters maybe we should phone Mo Farrah to give his medal back?

He is Swiss ya know. hehehe

He is not any European Championship winner at the 5,000 meters. That is easy to check and I did check.  He does seem to be quite the active runner in his home country and the translation or the article may have been an honest mistake or a deliberate exaggeration.

Tomorrow scumbag thieves will do the wai and get their 500B fine and off you go to rob next victim

I always except offers to go home with strange couples.   I am sure because he was so sexy a random threesome was perfectly logical.

Add a certain tv member to the list of liars.

Nathan Dugast, Silver Medal 5000 meters at the Swiss Championships On Championnats Suisses U20 / U23.

Even petty crime can be ugly. He's lucky he didn't get knifed.
