Krabi wedding parade carries 2 million baht dowry

The trailers decorated with flowers carried the groom, his groom mates, families and friends

A parade of 6 trucks and trailers to celebrate the wedding of a local couple in Lamtab District, Krabi, drew a lot of attention from people in the area.

 

The groom is 32 year old Tharapong Srisuk, who is a former sub-district chief and the bride is 27 year old Pitchaya Boonmuang. The trailers decorated with flowers carried the groom, his groomsmen, families and friends with the dowry including 2 million Baht in cash, 20 Baht of gold and a diamond necklace worth about 500,000 Baht heading towards Lamtab – Prudinna route for 7 kilometres to the bride’s house in Pru Dinna Sub-District.

Mine did, I wrote a cheque for one million and it was carried on a special tray throughout the ceremony, by agreement it had the words, void, do not cash, written on the back - the neighbours were well impressed.

Expensive wife! Damn sure I wouldn't have bought one for that price! 

Remind me to get new job, sub-district chief sounds okay, only 32 and already amassed 2.5 million plus 20 baht gold . very lucrative job, or is it the sideline.  lesson 1 one should never disclose ones wealth especially if you work in local goovernment

It does not say he disclosed his wealth, maybe it is just the odd change lying around in the house.

But sadly some like the very salacious and seamy side of the dowry system because it casts a pall as it were, despite clear evidence that it is hardly a feature at all of the vast majority of thai weddings.

That's not how it used to work, it was never a dowry anyway, which is a payment from the brides to the grooms family, it was a bride price, a payment from the groom, and it was always given to the brides family and not the bride.  It was originally intended to offset the loss of labor incurred from losing a worker on the farm, this evolved into a display of wealth as proof that the groom could afford to support the bride, and that is still how it is used.

Disgusting in a supposed buddhist society that should not nominally be emphasizing wealth or showing off.

Its kind of funny because it is almost backwards from many traditional western societies where the dowry was paid by the Brides' family for thanking the groom for taking the traditionally considered non-earning girl burden off her parents!
