Buying a KTM in Bangkok

Featured Replies

I think about buying a KTM 390 DUKE in Bangkok.

I have a quotation from one KTM dealer (2017 model,  209.900B, finance 4.5%)

That dealer is near to my home.

I am wondering if other dealers have maybe other prices, maybe some promotion, etc.

I want to buy from an official dealer with service center and obviously the nearer to my home the better.

But if another dealer offers something considerably better I like to look at my options.

Does anybody out there know if these dealers have price and promotion differences? Or are they all controlled and run by KTM Thailand with all same prices, same promotions, etc.?

Thanks for any information

Thanks, on their fb homepage they have the same price like "my" Bangkok dealer.

Just a small chance, I know but they have most models (KTM/Triumph++) available for test rides and they do sell if ‘demo’ bikes.
Might be worth a call???????

You should just take your phone and call other dealers, takes 5 minutes to figure it out, way easier than hoping that somebody here works at KTM Thailand ;)

That sounds like an old fashion analogue solution - I like it...

Off topic but can I ask why you decided to buy KTM 390 at that price... !? Perhaps why not considered some of the 300cc major bikes that are cheaper, with more resale value and reputation, say Yamaha MT-03 has 321cc...., was it just more power, what edged it for you with KTM... !?

1. I haven't made the final decision yet. I want to be prepared when I see the dealer and avoid telling him something like I think about and come back and maybe one more time, etc.

2. Probably I could find a couple of "good" reasons why this and not that. It seems the KTM is the most powerful and at the same most agile bike in that class. Apart from that the short summary is: I like that bike. And if it is as good as all the reviews I saw than it must be bloody good. The price is important in terms of about 200k or 300k. But I don't really care if it's 170 or 210.

3. I still have a few concerns which I will check like prices for service, possible problems with overheating, tire cost (I read they are very expensive) etc.

4. If you have any important fact why not this bike please let me know. I still have an open mind.

Get the latest model, the 2018, some flaws ironed out compared to the old model.

I would get the Duke over the Yam 03, that Duke should be very very fun to ride, bike magazines praise it highly. Okay re-sale value but come-on it's a 200k baht bike we are talking about and not a +1mill baht Ducati, so I would not worry too much about that.

Okay some horror stories as well, try goggle the ktm 390 forum, heaps of info there.

If possible test ride both bikes or at least have a sit on them and take a good close look at; welding-paint quality and so forth.

I just read this: http://www.visordown.com/road-tests/back-back-test-yamaha-mt-03-vs-ktm-duke-390-review

It's always hard to tell how biased these tests are but just reading that bring this "I want that KTM" feeling...

I was trying to find differences between the years. I seems that everybody agrees there were significant improvements from 2016 to 2017 but until now I did not find anything about 2017 to 2018 changes. It seems users (KTM 390 DUKE forum) think there is almost no difference.

Please let me know if you think different.

If it was me I would try to test ride a few of these, even Benelli TNT 300 (ABS?) and Kawa Z300.....You only know about comfort, gear change and feel of the breaks and acceleration and cornering if you ride them.

Dealers these days rarely have a test bike, pretend you want to buy a 2nd hand one and go and test ride those ....lol

Sorry, I mixed the years up, looks like indeed the 2017 onward is the new model.

Quote from visordown: The KTM is a bike that you want in your garage not because of any licence restriction but just because you want it in your garage. That’s why, as impressive, useful and fun as the MT-03 is, it can’t possibly win this test.

More:

The MT-03 is a more practical machine.

But the KTM is something else, something better than practical. It’s special, like a 125 with a proper engine fitted. I say ‘like’ but that is in fact what it is, since it shares its steel trellis frame with the Duke 125.

I remember in the late ‘80s, Performance Bikes (Performing Berks) magazine set about trying to fit a KX250 engine into an AR125. They never quite managed to make it work but it was an exciting idea to a 17-year-old me, and I bought the magazine every month hoping for an update.

The 390 Duke reminds me of it, with its 373cc single in the chassis of a 125, but it’s better, and it works, and someone has put it into production and you can buy it. Who cares how practical it is?

life is short

buy it

That is a good point which also crossed my mind.

I thought: Do I really need this bike?

No, I have a Suzuki Raider 150 which works just fine in Bangkok.

Do I want a bike with more fun?

Yes.

So if I don't buy it now when will I buy it?

Never! Because I am not young anymore and I won't buy it when I am 60.

Conclusion: Buy it now!

P.S.: That article from the link above mentions the Yamaha RD350LC. I was 15 when that came out and everybody wanted one. I was too young and in school so I didn't get one. I missed that one, I shouldn't miss the KTM DUKE...

Fly up to Udon and ride back with this almost new Yamaha MT-03, then start thinking about what you can do with your remaining 110k baht that you saved..... lol.
