Report Cambodia Shutdown: Unannounced Border Closure Sparks Tensions
Picture courtesy of amdech Hun Sen of Cambodia Facebook account via Bangkok Post Cambodia has suddenly closed its international border gate opposite Chanthaburi province with no warning, escalating tensions with Thailand. The unannounced shutdown of the Duang checkpoint in Battambang province was reported on Friday, citing citizen safety as the reason. The closure affects Ban Laem in Thailand's Pong Nam Ron district. The Cambodian move came as a unilateral decision in response to Thailand shortening operating hours at its Ban Laem checkpoint, reducing them from 6am-10pm to a mere 8am-4pm. This adjustment followed a brief border altercation near Ubon Ratchathani province on May 28. The abrupt closure left many stranded, including vehicles and pedestrians caught unawares by the blockade. Former Cambodian leader Hun Sen lauded his government's action, even suggesting a boycott of Thai goods unless normal hours are restored at the checkpoints. Thai authorities were blindsided by the decision, having received no prior notification from Cambodia. The Duang-Ban Laem crossing represents one of two key international points between Battambang and Chanthaburi. On another front, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet dismissed circulating reports regarding Thailand’s intentions to cut off internet and power supplies to its neighbour. He reassured that Cambodia is self-sufficient in internet services and has stopped purchasing bandwidth from Thailand. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra also refuted claims of an imminent severance, noting such a measure requires National Security Council approval and is not yet active policy. In summary, tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have intensified following the abrupt closure of a critical border gate and ongoing disputes related to internet and power services. Both nations are currently navigating these complex geopolitical issues. The situation remains fluid as both sides continue negotiations amidst regional pressures.
