They are cheap, yes, but that is little comfort when you are trying to get out of the car in a tropical storm and after following your loving wife's useful advice to be careful, you transform the bl**dy thing into a handful of spokes and tissue.

I see a few umbrellas on Lazada that are into the ฿1000.- price range and more, anyone have experience with any of these?

My uncle said he had the same umbrella for 40 years, he would leave it in restaurants and it would always be there when he went back, even if it had changed colour.

Don't buy the tissue parasols, they are for sunshine use only

 

We have a bunch of the bank freebies which, whilst small, work well enough to get from car to house / office. They fail occasionally, just get another from the pot where they live.

 

I do have a golf umbrella, but it's a bit of a wrestle getting out of the car with it.

Golf umbrellas all the way.  The only way to stay mostly dry in a tropical downpour.

actually i find umbrellas more dangerous in the heat of the sun.

 

i refer to certain people (or are they vain idiots) of height about 5"4

with extended umbrella that reaches your eye level.

so many times ive nearly had eyes taken out especially on stairs 

they walk around with no care or awareness whatsoever about anyone approaching,

why? as if they are not already dum dum.

 

one of the very few things i still find very annoying after many years here

Definitely. 500฿ in Taniya golf mall!

I got a reversible umbrella from Lazada for about 300baht which is great for getting in and out of the car on rainy days.

This used to annoy me in England many years ago - all be it when it was raining........mainly OAPs out shopping on the high street. It was like trying to move through a field of spikes!

Exactly my thought if you get a decent one they’ll out last many storms. 

i think collapsible is the only way to go,

and in case its a tropical monsoon strength kinda thing,

just accept getting wet, its not that cold thankfully

I've got one of those. When I'm using it, if there's a strong gust of wind, it becomes 'reversible' every time.

And knock everyone else off the street.  It's hard enough with an umbrella getting through narrow sidewalk gaps around trees and bus shelters and utility boxes and poles, and passing other people with umbrellas.  There's no way I'd take my big golf umbrella most places.

Normally that doesn't bug me, but OMG when we are at a crowded tourist site and I'm trying to take a picture of the lovely attraction but all I get are photos of peoples' umbrellas (which is even worse than having a photo album of pictures of strangers posed in front of lovely attractions because nobody can possibly take a picture of a thing without plopping themself in front of it as if they enhance the view somehow or need photographic proof that they were actually there or something)... yes, the sun is hot, people.  Wear a baseball cap.

...until you get inside where you're going and they've got the air conditioning turned up to "Arctic" level and now you're wet and clammy for the next couple hours.

If you wanna know, I bought a pretty solid umbrella (the ones big enough you can use as a walking stick) for around 100 Bhat from Aeon Supermarket about 2 years ago. Used it for about 6 months and left it at the hotel when I left Thailand.

use a plastic rain coat from a convenience store, much more practical

If you live in Bangkok, go to Foodland on Sukhumvit soi 5. Their parosols are sturdy and costs 250 baht.

Your Uncle is quite correct. You never have to buy a new umbrella. Just stop by any restaurant

and pick up the one "you" left behind. The same goes for phone chargers. Whenever you check

into a hotel just ask the front desk for one. They always have a box of them that have been left

behind by other hotel patrons. As they say, reduce, reuse, recycle.

I've always found the weakness with those (and also other 'higher quality' open sandals) is where the straps over the foot are glued/plastic- welded/connected to the base of the shoe.

Countless number times that after a few months I've tried to super-glue the straps back into the base.

Do the Ho Chi Minh sandals suffer the same weakness, I wonder?
