I miss stickman about as much as I await with eager anticipation for another riveting Dan Cheesy thread.

I wrote to him at the time if it was a money issue, he should consider charging.  Maybe have 5-10 free articles a year and for the fans, even if it's just 5-10 dollars a year, it would have been a nice earner for him.  IIRC, at one point he had 300,000 site visits a month, and in spite of the snark he gets here from some, a loyal following.  It would have also freed him up to cover more general content.  The bar section of his column I just passed over -- booooring.  I did enjoy many of his opening pieces, as well as his selection of weekly letters.

In any case, he answered at the time that his decision to discontinue the site was not about money.

Nah, Trink tried that and it didn't work. People love free stuff.

I didn't read his stuff much, but I liked that it was available if I wanted to.

you, or anyone in your family shrub, could not get into the Uni I graduated from if your lives depended on it.

Stickman was a goldmine of information in the earlier days of the internet. I do miss his writing about Bangkok but there's a lot more of information available now on You Tube and Thai Visa.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just found out about his reappearance from a link on another site. Thoroughly enjoyed his weekly columns and some of the reader submissions. Certainly kept me going during the cold winters back home. His recent Pattaya piece was fresh and lively, and I thought it was fairly balanced and informative. It was a pleasure to read him again. Felt a bit like old times.

Posts quoting stickman or linking to his site have been removed.

If you wish to discuss him no problem, but please do not quote him or link to him in any way.(his request).

Thank you.

The guy had 1000 positive information and I think helped a lot of people.

Who cares about his thoughts on your reference? ?

So you take advice from someone that has never lived in Thailand, about every day life in Thailand? ????

Are you kidding me? Stick lived in Bangkok for more than 15 years, spoke Thai at a very good level, and was married to a Thai lady.

Use to read himyears ago but got turned off with all the complaining and whining about how great it would be back in New Zealand. I guess he found out how great it would be and now is back writing about Thailand.

used to read occasionally until he started condoning and promoting the sex industry full time. i'm sure there's an audience for this lowest common denominator content but not being a sex-pat or sex tourist or remotely interested in the bar scene there's nothing there for me.

it is a pity because there is so much more to thailand than the sex industry and the sad folks partaking.

A boring, talentless hack, but considering how deadly boring New Zealand is, I'm not at all surprised he came back to Thailand.

He started as a commentator on Bangkok's nightlife with emphasis on the sex scene, and despite an attempt to take the column more mainstream, he's back to doing what he does best. There are plenty of other blogs/groups about the non-sex scene. Stickman has his audience.

Stick killed off Trink and moved us all into a new era. He documented a certain section of thai culture and for  certin period of time and he did it very well. He certainly captured the zeitgeist in his opening column and there were lots of good writers and fiery debates in the submissions section.

But Thailand moves on. A different type of expat came to the country. Thailand joined the social media community and the old was out. Stickman became less relevant just as Trink did before him. I posted a number of submissions to his site over the years but at the end recommended her quit because the Thailand he documented was fast disappearing.

When he sold his site to the new guy, Stick became little more than a pimp, with his pictures of prostitutes posing and the constant features about online escort agencies. He'd sold the soul of his site. I met him for a coffee once and he was a really nice guy. It's a huge mistake for him to attempt to come back because his Thailand isn't there anymore and there are plenty of new kids on the social media block doing their thing. If he couldn't make the adjustment back to farangland then he'll end up like Trink, lost in some twilight world.

Stick killed off Trink

I don't think so. Trink lost his column at the Bangkok Post soon after Thaksin first came to power and began his mission of "cleaning up" Thailand, including pressuring media.

Trink was a talented, if old school, writer, always a pleasure to read even if he didn't have much to say, which, of course, is the mark of a good raconteur. Stick has a less gifted pen but his columns always have useful info.

For what it's worth, I would advice Stick to expand his beat. The raunchy entertainment niche is fine but being stuck in NEP and Soi Cowboy isn't. There's a heckuva lot more in town now for the naughty boy, from clubs to apps to cafes and the street scene.

It was the Bangkok Post that killed off Trink so no real connection, but yes, Stickman became probably the most high profile online alternative, even though they were both quite different in style. His news roundup was (and still is) worth reading.

True, he kept showcasing (often repeat) performances of girls from an escort agency who were in many cases well past their prime. His girl of the week often featured inexplicable choices of bargirls with obvious surgery, tattoos and braces, all things that he and most of his readers would frequently comment on as unappealing.

most of his photos are no more than snapshots.

i rarely read his column just checked now and then to see if he'd stopped condoning and promoting the sex industry - he never had. the 'portrait' photos he took of bar girls and prostitutes lacked imagination and it seems he fails to grasp the basics of portrait composition. add to that the girls often looked uncomfortable.

Why should he? It's basically a naughty nightlife column and always was, with a few side excursions into other subjects. If he was to write a different type of column, better to do it under a new website using a different name, with zero reference to the bar scene whatsoever.

Why would he stop condoning and promoting the sex industry? That's the raison d'etre for the column! You can read Richard Barrow for a general Thailand blog; there's no need to get hot & bothered about Stickman.

i do miss stickman's weekly article.  i enjoyed the bangkok gossip section more than the opening piece most weeks.  i do remember towards the end of the column, stick had said the entity that he sold the site to was no longer willing/able to pay him.  and he really didn't want to do it for free given the time and effort (who can blame him).  an end of long era.  i hope he is doing well in NZ.

Sold the site?? Sound like a whole load of crap to me. No, I reckon he hung onto it just in case he wanted to return. What idiot would buy a failing site and then pay the ex owner - then run out of cash to pay the ex owner Stickman. Sounds like a whole load of BS. Same as a lot of what Stickman says - BS !! lies, lies, lies.

You want to know the truth about the nightlife in Thailand ?? go yourself - then you know.

Neither do I - he makes up a lot of BS and maybe he believes his own BS now. He's definitely a legend in his own mind.
