A resort that had allegedly encroached on forestland belonging to the Pha Taem National Park in Ubon Ratchathani’s Khong Chiam district has been given until July 15 to demolish its buildings and restore the area to its original state, said park head Nakarin Suthattho on Sunday.

Nakarin said his office had filed a police complaint against Ban Mai Hom resort on November 25, 2015 resulting in the provincial court’s later ruling that the resort was located on state-owned land. The resort owner and television news reporter Nila Singkhiri was deemed to have no ill-intention because she had bought the land from another person, resulting in the dismissal of a criminal case against her.

But the court ordered Nila and the land’s occupants to vacate, demolish structures and restore the area to its original state by November 30, 2017 Nila officially requested a postponement of the demolition order pending her appeal hearing, then appealed the case to the Ubon Ratchathani Administrative Court in February in order to get a court injunction against the resort demolition. That court issued an order on May 23 dismissing Nila’s request for injunction.

The park then issued the latest order for Nila to proceed with the resort’s demolition and restoration of the land back to its original state by July 15, said Nakarin.

If she fails to do so, officials will proceed to demolish the structures and issue a bill reflecting the demolition costs for her to pay, he said.

Seems harsh to me.

Why can't they just demolish the bit that the alleged encroachment is on?

It's surely not all the land, or as Yet Another has just said the person that sold her the land needs prosecuting!!

This happens while the rich and powerful who encroached on forest land in Chiang Mai will probably get away with it, that story seems to have died it's suspected death

and they Really don't proceed against that seller ?! amazing

What about buying / accepting any form of property from someone who has no right to sell it?

It's par for the course in Thailand to check first if the chanut or whatever land document is genuine, is unencumbered and it's land which can be sold.

The reporter is quite famous, I find it difficult to believe there was no check as above before money changed hands.

Bought land without chanot - land ownership papers. Double stupid

she requested a postponement so she could make even more money before it was demolished, once they have found it is illegal it should be demolished straight away. The original owner should also be charged and all money made from the hotel in question should be returned to the govt as it has been made illegally, would make people think twice before putting millions into building illegal resorts/hotels

Not the National Park, but the buyer would have to sue the seller.
