School criticized for allowing "sweety" hazing ritual

Picture: Daily News

A school in Sakon Nakhon has been criticized online after pictures emerged of male and female recruits passing boiled sweets from mouth to mouth in a hazing ritual.

Some claimed that this was a way to pass viruses that could cause Hepatitis A and B.

Just one kiss could be fatal

The pictures appeared on Facebook on the "Anti Sotus" page with the tagline that "kisses are important for the good of the nation".

Hazing is the practice of welcoming newbies into an organization such as a school or university and is often the subject of debate in Thailand for going too far.

I'm guessing monkey see, monkey do.

I think potentially exchanging bodily fluids is probably not a good idea.

I don't care what they say, I'm not kissing a monkey - even for a free sweet.

never ceases to amaze me the ignorant things "educators" here think of . Hazing should not be part of school period.

You don't think these kids aren't already doing that?

And how is this a 'hazing ritual'  its not even slightly unpleasant.

Good grief. Can we please just disconnect FB now?

My wife was watching a lakorn on one of the main channels the other night, and an attractive young couple went in for a romantic smooch, and as soon as their faces got close, the whole thing was blurred/pixelated out.

So it's OK for a woman or a guy to b**ch slap a woman character on TV, beat her up, or even suggestive rape scenes... But heaven forbid a lip-to-lip kiss, that's going to be censored out.

Haha.  If they consider this bad, they should visit a few colleges in the U.S.... where far worse happens with few repercussions.

And the lame excuse of "they could be passing around hepatitis"??  If that was the worry, every couple in a relationship should have to be tested and every time people share a drink or something  the Health Police should come swooping in.  Are we sure this isn't about "OMG PDA!!!"?

I guess I am just an old fuddy duddy, not impressed with that shit at all.

Someone was paying attention in sex ed class.

I think Thai censoring can be very funny, at times. Imagining what is being blurred out can be more fun than the real thing.

I'm quite happy to say that I am a young fuddy duddy and that shit disgusts me.

Kissing on the lips has been seen since the first silent movies for gosh sakes , but here 'eaven forbid.

When a mate and myself went for a swim at a local hotel a few weeks ago a couple of girls got out . I asked my mate why and he thinks it is that they might get pregnant swimming in the same water.    Oh while on this subject , why do girls put on more clothes to go swimming. They arrive in a T shirt and shorts , come out the changing room wearing lycra from neck to knees , and a costume over the top of that lot.

I think that you're referring to the hazing that occurs in some college fraternity organizations. This kind of activity is certainly on the decline and is specifically prohibited by the national organizations, who will take action against the offending chapters. Not to say hazing doesn't happen,  but it's not nearly as prevalent as it was 20-50 years ago. There have been several extreme incidents in the last couple of years in which participants have been charged with crimes and sent to prison.

The hazing at Thai universities is universal. All incoming students are subjected to it - not just those who are joining extracurricular clubs or organizations. In fact, university staff generally condones and often conducts the hazing. My daughter experienced this firsthand at one of the Rajabhat universities - it was something she had to endure if she wanted to study there.

Yup, that's what I meant, but really I was referring to hazing in general.  This stunt, I would think was ridiculous and idiotic if I had to do it, but I wouldn't consider it offensive, damaging, dangerous, etc.  Some of the stuff truly might be, but this specific situation?  Silly.

(And, national fraternities prohibit hazing IF the frat has a national organization.  At my college, there were complaints that there were no repercussions for the "Greek societies" *because* they were not national organizations, existing only at that school, and had no one to answer to.)

I got passed one from a cute ladyboy and the thais loved this too...for my finale I passed MY stick to one of the thai teachers and our lips touched--hooo boy!!  joop! joop!!
