US citizens; Use your credit card at the pump?

Featured Replies

I certainly did.  I didn't realize this has become a problem in the USA...

[As Fourth of July travel heats up, the U.S. Secret Service is warning motorists, businesses and police of a disturbing surge in criminals’ stealing credit information at gas pumps.

Fraudsters are installing a tiny device called a skimmer inside the gas pump.

The device copies credit card information when customers pay.]

Will not be a problem in Thailand as they don't have self-serve/pay fuel pumps....or at least I've never seen one in my 10 years of buying fuel for my vehicle here in Thailand and paying with my credit cards.

Maybe there ordered and on there way. ?

There is a coin fuel pump in our village that sells at 95 but has 91 allegedly from the colour and it delivers a bit short, there are a few more not sure if all of them do it though.

Really nasty link with video blocking text and total overblown report of something that has been going on for years in the USA because they refused to join the rest of the world for these many years and use chip technology.

My US credit cards and ATM have a chip
....your point is?

Talking to me?  It's simply news to me that this is going on in the USA.  When I lived there--admittedly years ago--I routinely pumped my own gas and paid with a credit card.  Never a problem.

I think I will continue to pay with cash in Thailand even if/when they install credit card machines.

The point is US has only started to use chips in the last year or so - they have been available for a decade but banks chose to let people lose their money rather than pay for upgrade of cards and equipment and  preferred to pay the loss (not considering their customers concerns/time as of any importance).

USA or Thailand....just use cash !!

And where do you get that cash - from the ATM - which may have skimmers attached.  As this has started to be countered they have targeted the mostly unprotected gas station terminals and credit cards used in them.

To each his own.  I sure know using my U.S. credit cards in Thailand cuts down greatly on the amount of money I need to transfer into Thailand to pay bills, I get 1.5% cash back on each purchase, protected by U.S. consumer protection laws, don't have to worry about getting scammed at an ATM when using your card to get money, don't have to worry about getting robbed because I'm known to carry around a lot of cash or keep it in my house, etc...etc.  Naw....like it or not....cash sales continue to go the the way of the horse & buggy.

Obviously you are aware that you can always withdraw cash directly from the counter and not be dependant of potential ATM skim.scams !!

Fine, of course, if your favourite pastime is staring at the floor, walls and ceiling inside a bank branch for hours and hours on end!!

With SCB bank in Thailand you don't need a plastic card to withdraw cash from an ATM.

You just open up your banking app on your phone, select the amount to withdraw and you are given a code.

Go to an SCB ATM, enter your phone number and the code and the cash is dispensed.

Your card can't be skimmed because it was never used.
