CityNews – Police have been cracking down Tai Yai gangs following complaints from local Chiang Mai citizens.

 

Following complaints by local vendors at Warorot Market regarding Tai Yai teens who have been causing trouble in the area, police set out an investigation on July 22nd, visiting well-known gathering spots where these alleged teen gangs hang out near Jansom Bridge.

TaYai - so these would be Shan, hill tribe, teens. Might be helpful if they pointed that out in the article, given it's English language, rather than me having to google it.

There is a difference between Shan and Tai Yai .

Tai Yai are not considered to be a hill tribe , like the Lisu and Akha

Following a post on social media that showed youths fighting in a popular Chiang Mai tourist area the cops swung into action.

 

A post on Facebook on the page of Boonyakiet Khamphitak showed several young men fighting in full view of tourists.

 

Posters asked where were the cops to prevent such damaging scenes at the Ta Pae gate.

 

Soon "The Sun" gang were in custody with provincial bigwig Pol Col Piyaphan Patrapongsin pictured with the four arrested miscreants.

 

One 19 year old was a Thai while the other three, two aged 17 and one 15, are from the Thai Yai ethnic group who have Myanmar nationality.

 

They were all arrested by Muang District police at a flower shop after the violence on Monday.

 

They had been arguing with a rival group in the tourist area.
