Cabinet nod for Bt85bn double-track rail project in the North

By The Nation

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the State Railways of Thailand’s Den Chai-Chiang Rai-Chiang Khong double-track rail project, at a cost of Bt85.345 billion.

The bidding process is expected to take place this year, after which construction of the entire route will take four years.

The SRT has divided the project into three construction contracts: the Den Chai-Ngao section, worth Bt26.704 billion; the Ngao-Chiang Rai section, worth Bt28.735 billion; and the Chiang Rai-Chiang Khong section, worth Bt17.482 billion.

Land expropriation will cost Bt10.66 billion, and the cost of hiring a project consultant is Bt1.764 billion.

I would have thought that extending the line from Chiangmai to Chiangrai/Chang Kong would have been far more beneficial.

Why the SOUTH never get any infrastructure projects and no proper or tangible investment? ?

They blow their chances, so to speak!

That is in fact a splendid idea.

But the trouble is that Bangkok is thought to be the centre of all things.

Cross-country connections are not in vogue.

It's shorter to take cargo from China to Bangkok and v.v.

To be fair:

Thailand plans to build a 62km motorway in the southern province of Songkhla to the border with Malaysia in a bid to boost bilateral trade and cross-border tourism that is currently worth an estimated Bt500 billion per year.

The Cabinet yesterday gave the green light for an ambitious development plan for the Southern region that also includes targeted support for the southernmost provinces.

All the main routes need to be double track for safety as well as convenience of travel & frequency.

long before you even consider the high speed option.

My only gripe is letting SRT (the worst run Government Dept in the world) build & run it.

You cannot even get a drink on the trains only due to their incompetence of screening staff so we all have to suffer

It would be a huge waste of resources to build and maintain double trackage for such low volumes. The trend with the huge railways in North America has been to switch from double to single track. Better to go with sufficient passing sidings.
