The death of Walking Street

As someone who's new to Pattaya, may I ask for a couple of suggestions?   I realize it's a subjective opinion but that's totally fine.   (Places you like to drink/hang out and spend time with some hot chicks.)

If one wants to drink, hang out and spend time with hot chicks, Soi 6 is 10 times better then WS in my opinion.

Plus, they have rooms on the premises and the overall cost is about 1/3rd of WS

But, to each their own.

have you walked down Walking Street lately, could be any street in Calcutta, full of Indians, (didnt see one cowboy)

It's the "Indian Season" at the moment ............ then Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc etc. Same every year .......... different cults seem to arrive the same time on a cycle each year. When one "cult" stops coming another is found to fill the gap. Think the Chinese will be coming the whole year round soon ....... judging by their numbers ........... it's time for all expats to stay away from all the tourist spots period ...... it's mayhem. I stick to Soi Bukhaw these days ....... much more fun & relaxed atmosphere.

First time in Pattaya last week since moving here last year and I was very disappointed in Walking Street.

I sat down to eat at Pearl restaurant for about 2 hours and watched as I saw herds after herds of Chinese with young kids pass by.  Then when darkness came, like cockroaches, it was all horny Indians crawling up and down the street.

This place is over... When the Chinese have discovered the honey pot, it's time to move out somewhere else.

Try it in high season. The chinese will still be there but the Indians will have gone

Yes well, I travel a lot and they are everywhere now.  Every tourist spot in the world.

They are even at record numbers in the Philippines.

But, the one place I have seen a few if none actually is Angeles City.

I like AC a lot.  If this place deteriorates to a big Zero, AC may be an option for me.

You comment on some good points. But in reality, it is kind of sad.  Trying to escape certain people.

Like you mention there are still certain pockets.  The Soi 7 and 8 bars are another mostly Falang still drinking.

But,  this is just the beginning of the Chinese.  They love it here so much.  In 3 to 5 years everything will be compromised for them.  In 10 years I bet very very few Falang will be here.  Just wait, it is coming like no one ever imagined......

And the worst of all... it ain't going to be the city dwelling Chinese, who might have some resemblance of manners and even bring something interesting to the mix, but the bottom of the barrel mainlanders. The same ones f.ex. Hong Kongers bash.

Ahh he is still alive, used to see him often at the bar just south of Marine Disco in the mid 80s, one night he asked me if I wanted to join him on a hunt for Tigers along the Burma border! Marine disco were jammed packed every night and all the girls went there after their bars closed, happy times compared to Thailand today.

That is so in the loops like beach and walking St. But do some observation around Marina/Big C mall and 3 stars across 2nd road. The area is full of independent coed groups. Have also noticed Chinese males in company of "local" Thai ladies around.

Yet new go-gos keep opening. If WS went away where would the good people of China march?

The Ruskies have there own bars. They own the back end of WS. Were good friends with Thaksin. The Arabs and Indians have their own bars.

The Chinese will open their own girlie bars. I'll bet there are places in Chinatown now that offer things you don't know about. They are into making money every which way so bars are coming. No, you say, foreigners can't own bars. 555555

If they do require all the neon to be taken down, as threatened, it would be too sanitary.

Tell your farang friends to come!!!! Enough said.

I think you will find that's Hot Tuna Bar.........half way along WS.

Rolling Live that was on the corner of Soi 16(?) and WS was redeveloped and is now a bigger version of The Stones House which is at the start of WS .

Yes hot Tuna bar named after the Jefferson Airplane spinoff. It features the same kind of music as the Blues factory and Rolling....good fun if you are into the music especially if lam is playing

You may dislike the music, which is the same sort of dance/ hip hop mix you find everywhere. I'm fine with dance music, but not impressed with an awful lot of it, I don't think anyone who went clubbing in the late 80s and early 90s ever could be. Gotta agree that "f'ing hands up" tune is mind numbing.

No idea of the prices, probably as you mention - but the girls seem to be quite free to leave at closing and do as they like without too many formalities. It's also a pretty non pushy place in terms of drinks hustling, though at the same time the place attracts some high rollers, and pulling the bell happens more often than usual. Barfines have always seemed redundant in Pattaya at the tail end of the evening due to the sheer volumes of girls hitting the streets, it's nothing like the Soi Cowboy grapevine. So yes, I think pretty easy to swap phone numbers and hit the disco or wherever if the girl likes you, though I think that's true of many places.

I'm not interested in girls free to leave at the end of the evening...all girls at all go go bars are free to leave. So I'm sorry but I don't understand your point.  If they do not take bar fines during the course of the night then the Go go is no good. Waiting till 3am watching snobby, distant girls Hoover up drinks and dancing fully clothed is not my idea of fun. The S  has A good internet presence and is linked to a famous forum but its followers are amateur mongers who are easily pleased. They are the kind of people who talk about joiner fees for hotels! A few yards away Electric Blue is a hundreds times more fun, and the girls are in varying degree of dress with a whole nude stage. They are more friendly. By 3am the girls have gone having been bar fined. The bell is rung by the management quite often and the service staff and MS are good. It is a properly run pld style GG bar. To be honest any GG where the girls are dressed and don't do BFs are just tourist ripp off clip joints. They offer nothing you could not get in Europe. The Coyote style and Agency girls led to a lowering of standards and services over the past decade which younger people, and newbies to Thailand  just accept as normal and acceptable. Bar fines are part of the GG scene but some BFs are stupidly high. Some GGs are not interested in in their real job as they are just money laundering fronts.

Why? What do you think is the purpose of GG bars in Thailand? Why do you want to see a way of life destroyed? Why do you want to see hundreds of thousands jobs destroyed? And why would you wish to see the chosen work of young women, work leading to their economic freedom and independance, be destroyed? Do you want to see the the Las Vegas Casinos closed down? Or british pubs demolished?  Do you want to see the brothels of New Zealand and Germany bulldozed? Can you please enlarge on your comment   thanks

I don't think many of us ever visits WS more than maximum twice per year , and that would probably be because we need to show first time travellers what's it like.

I would think one day in WS is enough for most of them .

But as long as the Chinese and Russians keeps coming WS will always be busy , they will not spend much but that's another story .

Well, yes I've certainly seen girls disappear upstairs to get dressed and subsequently leave with a customer, so pretty clear they can be bf'd. My answer was vague due to the fact that I think barfines are a ripoff generally so I wouldn't even bother to ask. They also don't have two tiers of girls there either as far as I'm aware (regular girls and coyotes), it seems to operate on a simpler model. Agree about EB up the soi, but the bars in this group all close at 3am sharp, so I see it more as one of the late options, What's up and Misty are similar, as well as a few on the main drag.

Bar fines are part of the warp and weft of Go Go bars. However, the potential ripp off is when the bar fines are unreasonably high. Anything over 1k is too high in my opinion. But if a girl leaves with a punter the bar must be compensated because her absence means one less girl on stage entertaining folks and one less girl getting lady drinks. If you think all bar fines are a ripp off them you dont really understand the economic realities of the GG business model. Perhaps you are in the wrong place. You should be in Insomnia, the I bar, the beer garden or even beach road where there are no bar fines. But a go go bar has many overheads and its only right that you should pay a reasonable fine to take a girl off the premises. Girls should also be paid. Too many western men do not understand the rules of the game. The club we are talking about may not have a two tier system. They a one tier system of fully clothed, overpaid Agency girls giving little or no service. Distantly cool due to their high salaries it appears to me they are not working for the bar...The bar is working for them. The place is a dead loss. However, it is not alone alas..It is all too common. Thus.....'The Death of Walking Street is the title of this thread.

Of course I understand the business model, and I'm aware of the economic pressures on the bars in current times. I think barfines are a rip off in the same way as I think lady drinks are very often a rip off, though this varies according to the place. I always managed things fine myself outside of bar hours, so I'm talking about a personal preference rather than a lack of understanding of how the places operate. Don't forget a lot of customers go in the bars because they enjoy the atmosphere of them, not with a view to taking out a girl.

Thanks for this pic. October 1979 was my first trip to Thailand. No interest for Pattaya then, went hiking amongst the poppy fields on the Burmese border...

Well this is deja vu for sure, and actually quite amazing

The guy in the lower right (brown shirt and bell bottom trousers) is me.

I believe on that trip down from Bangkok we had to use the ferry to cross the Chonburi River (maybe someone can verify the timeframe on that).

I don't have have pix of my Pattaya trips then, but still have my Patpong photos from that era. I used to be part owner of the Pitstop in those days (was next to Ricks Grand Prix Bar).

Thanks for the memory jolt.

If you don't care why bother contributing but actually I cant understand what point you are trying to make so it's difficult to respond in a meaning full way.

What atmosphere? If customers are not buying drinks and flirting with the girls there is not really an atmosphere. There is poor music, bored, clothed girls, expensive drinks and not much conversation.

Who said anything about not buying drinks and flirting with the girls. I'm talking about barfines, especially the futility of paying them after 3am, within an hour of closing, unless you've got very deep pockets and a philanthropic disposition. There's also a good argument to make that hotter girls in very skimpy attire (hardly clothed) with a good attitude are a lot more enjoyable to watch dancing than overweight munters. And musically I'd rather be in a bar with funk and hip hop type music that the girls enjoy dancing to than somewhere playing an old Scorpions and Bon Jovi soundtrack.

"Rock" discos don't work. Sweethearts made a good go of it, but eventually had to change. TQ is the only one left, but is hardly a gogo these days; more of an afternoon watering hole for retired American bikers.
