What is this obsession with 'shopping'. For crying out loud, who comes to live in Thailand and to Pattaya because its great for shopping?   How sad is that.

My thoughts too. Also it's a bit girly. Since when do men get excited about new shopping opportunities? In Thailand?

Maybe your phobia kicking in.

I probably will never buy a single thing from a shop.  Have been to T21 in BKK 100 times never bought a shop item.

But, I do like to walk around, get a coffee, do some girl watching (which I bet will be amazing), go to the movie, get a snack, have some lunch or go to the food court.  Maybe your day is filled with total excitement, but an honest person will admit there is some down time here.  Any place actually.

So, for me it beats sitting on my nuts in a condo.

Many people do not go to the mall for shopping. Have you even been to Thailand?  Malls are a place to escape the heat and/or rain and smog/exhaust fumes with filtered clean cool air and wifi and food, that also happen to have some shopping.  I never go to Central for shopping with the exception of the grocery store sometimes.

At this point, if I went to Pattaya, it would be for the shopping and beaches, as Little Yezhov no longer has the stamina to indulge in non stop frenzied fun.

But since I dont shop and the beaches there suck, guess I aint going to Pattaya...

Some people think Bangkok is better for frenzied fun. Certainly better for HE massages. Soi 24/1 and the surrounding environs and purlieus are better than the whole of Pattaya. Plenter of sweet, good hearted FOFers.

Yeah but there are more temples in Bangkok and oddball places that just pop up. Living in Thonburi makes me realize how smart it is to get out of the Sukhamvit comfort zone. Outside the Fun Zone and two shopping malls, what can you do in Pattaya? Drink beer in a Guesthouse bar and scream about Mourinho?

And what's wrong with that?

Seriously, Pattaya is a lot more family orientated than Bangkok. Much more for families to do. My favourite day out is Kho Larn, safe, clean beaches and laid back. Also has 2 water parks, crocodile farm, dolphin show, aquarium, Nong Nooch Gardens, and a lot more.

And, of course several family orientd malls, where we can dump the kids off in a play area, go ice skating, bowling, cinema, restaurants etc. and all in air con.

For the confirmed batchelor - Bangkok. For the family man - Pattaya.

Once you have visited the tourist traps you have been there done that.  So then you are just left with malls and beer bars again.

It's quite different visiting for a couple weeks and living here.

I live here. Go to Koh Larn as often as possible. Water parks are a regular day out. Going later this week with the next door neighbours and their kids. A recent addition to Nong Nooch gardens is the Dinosaur Park. As my son is obsessed with dinosaurs, his 2 favourite places on the planet are Nong Nooch Gardens and the Dinosaur park in Khon Kaen. He's also into sharks and has been to the aquarium at least 4 times.

He's also obsessed with aeroplanes and will be blown away when he visits T21 for the first time. Also likes Ripley's - mainly for the aeroplane sticking through the wall!

Never been to Ripleys, never will.  It's a stupid gimick for Thais that believe in ghosts.

If you live in Orlando you don't go to Disneyworld except when relatives come from out of town.  Same same.

I live in Thailand!!  I live here to experience the outdoors, the golf, the swimming, the boating, trekking, the history, Malls I can get in the west, this country I can only see here. Good luck with you trying to escape  the very reality of the country you are in, personally I dont see the point. Each to his own.

Agree, it's not for me but my wife and son are Thai and they love it. So do her 2 older children who live with their father and visit regularly.

As I said, Bangkok for boys, Pattaya for families.

I live about 20 miles outside Pattaya and I hardly ever go into the City.  There is a lot more that makes this Province  a great place to live than is depicted by those who on;y know the bars and the girl scene, oh, and the malls of course.

You can get golf, swimming, boating and trekking in your own country and probably better. I don't have malls in my country, so malls are a Thai thing to me.

Haha, good one, not in UK mate, unless you want to freeze to death most months of the year.  When I take my boat out on a warm  December day, then come home and have an evening swim in my pool, I know exactly why I live in Thailand and it has nothing to do with swanky malls that I can find anywhere. If its shopping you want, go to Singapore or Hong Kong.

I lived 40 minutes drive from Royal Lytham and an hours drive from Royal Birkdale, not many courses in Thailand, to match them. My home town also had a very active yacht club. Sailed an Osprey with my mate. Came 8th in the world championships.

I also lived 40 minutes drive from the Lake District and was brought up trekking (hiking) with a Wainwright in my hand. Thailand's too hot for serious hiking.

Nearest mall to me was over 60 miles away and only ever visited it once.

Its all about personal choice and experience. I came to Asia first as a wide eyed 18 year old and fell in love with it.  I love the nature and surroundings of some of  the Thai golf courses, I love sailing the islands and never get tired of the exotic feeling of the place.  Adventure Trekking  here is ever bit of an adventure as any to be found anywhere in the world and if you wish to confine yourself to the Northern mountains in winter, not at all hot; cold in fact. UK has some nice places to offer, but in my eyes, perhaps with the possible exception  of the Scottish Highlands, they don't compare to what is here.  One thing is for sure, shopping malls don't figure in either of our posts as being of any interest at all.

Seems dumb. There are so many better places in the world and even Thailand for boating and swimming...

As I said, I see them as a Thai thing, when I came to Pattaya as a tourist, I never went near a mall but they're what Thais do in their downtime. I try to live a Thai lifestyle with my Thai family so, unfortunately for me, they are part of my life. Luckily, as I said before, here they aren't just shopping malls, they have a lot more to offer.

Agree that most of the activities that we both seemed to partake in, in the UK, are made all the more pleasant with the Thai weather - except hiking! On that we'll have to agree to disagree.

I wonder if T21 at Pattaya will have food court prices similar to BKK, being around 30-50 baht per dish. Anyone know if this is the case?

Thats an odd comment in itself, unless you are a keen shopper.  I dont live here for the shopping, I got enough of that at home in the UK. I recently spent 40 minutes in Central Festival car park trying to get a parking slot.  Gave up in the end and went elsewhere  If 21 helps that situation then roll on. Its only major league if you value shopping, which I dont.  A quieter wander to find something I actually want and need and a coffee, maybe a meal is enough for me.  I dont give a toss about a fantastic new mall, unless it helps me have a quieter life in the other ones.

Why do members who don't like shopping or shopping malls feel they need to comment that they don't like shopping in malls? Is it some kind of advanced enlightenment to be a person that doesn't like malls?

If they didn't, it would look like the entire world is in love with malls. Gotta keep the guesstimated 5% mall rat population in check.

If it was that dumb everyone in the world would end up in the same place?  Now that would be dumb.

Pattaya wasn't secluded before Central came, it was just right. The largest shopping mall the infrastructure can withstand on a good day is the size of Royal Garden. Gone are the days when you could zip from Jomthien to Dolphin without getting stuck for 30 mins.

You don't get out much. Just last night I zipped from Jomtien to (ex) Dolphin in no time flat. That was at 5 pm. I didn't time it, but there wasn't any traffic congestion and it was probably around 5 - 10 minutes.

I have no more difficulty getting around now than I did back in 2005. I'm on a bike and rarely get stuck in traffic. Add to that the knowledge of shortcuts and it's all a breeze any time of day and night to go anywhere I want.

With 2 large shopping malls in town from next month on, it's probably a good time to find another secluded resort and spare us the complaints.

This is a thread specifically devoted to the opening of a new mall. If you don't like malls, why click on it?... or are you looking for the date so you know when you have to leave town. Perhaps you just enjoy arguing with what you call "mall rats"?.. and it's way higher than 5%. I'd say you're in the 5%, and the normal population that visits malls is 95%, most of whom are Thai people. The 5% are expats who came here for other reasons, which are fast disappearing to make way for new malls. That's probably under 5% now. Perhaps 5% of expats that still hang out at Tahitian Queen.

I would say there is an almost 0% chance it will be like Bkk.  Same as how Korat T21 food court does not have Bkk prices.  Pattaya, being a tourist town, is going to be even more expensive than Korat. The Bkk food court is not as good as it seems anyways because the portions are really small.
