Even at 38 baht to the pound most retirees won’t and cannot leave Thailand

The guy who's been married for 30 years seems very happy with his life. He also believes that part of the success of his marriage is that his wife is only around 10 years younger than him, I don't think he's gonna be looking for a younger model.

Another thing being, as someone in his 70's, he doesn't want to be doing the 12'ish hour flight LON-BKK any more, something I notice in many of my septuagenarian friends. Doesn't want to live in LOS full time either.

Ah yes that unfortunate time in life when irrespective of financial situation, or exchange rate, a good shag and party lifestyle are no longer worth the effort of a 12 hour flight......?...I wish both your friends well as winter approaches in the UK

Like I've said already today, we aborted one 2 months back, that is the first time it has happened to me, so I may go back to using condoms or just get the snip

Maybe when you get older and look back on your life , you may be think that your child would be turning 18 today , well, you wouldnt even know exactly when his/her birthday would have been .

Poor little kid , didnt even have the chance to be born

I've just moved back to the UK. The Thai weather is the one thing I will miss.

I can't get a job, or (free) healthcare, or a pension in Thailand, and I'm only a mere 53 y o.

As far as the party lifestyle, there's a danger of drinking yourself to death (as I've seen some do in Thailand), plus I can get drunk for about the same price in the UK, Thailand just ain't that cheap any more.

As far as the sh**ing, been there seen it done it, can't be bothered with it any more. Expense, hassle, VD, someone on the phone every day (mobile phones were a game-changer!!).

As good a way to go as any.

I can't decide which is best, death from viagra with a friend (or two) on top of me in a short time hotel, or drinking until my liver fails.

I'm leaning towards booze at the moment, drunk twice yesterday, and once today.

Cry me a river.
It wasn't even a child, it was a collection of cells, non sentient.

Will I regret it later in life, no I will not.

I'm not sure why people seem to think everybody else feels in the same way, and has a similar outlook on life as they do.

I enjoy my privacy and I relish having a very simple life. Having children is not for me, and I know that to be a fact; at least I know that and I don't go ahead and bring lives into this world, without even considering it. How many kids grow up in homes that have issues, with parents that are not capable or not loving enough? How much does that hurt and destroy lives to those children as they grow into adulthood?

Something that is not and will never be, wasn't /

A bit complicated, but this is from Mel's Wikipedia page:

Gibson was born in Peekskill, New York, the sixth of eleven children, and the second son of Hutton Gibson, a writer, and Irish-born Anne Patricia (née Reilly, died 1990).[7][8] Gibson's paternal grandmother was opera contralto Eva Mylott (1875–1920), who was born in Australia, to Irish parents,[9] while his paternal grandfather, John Hutton Gibson, was a millionaire tobacco businessman from the American South.[10][11] One of Gibson's younger brothers, Donal, is also an actor. Gibson's first name is derived from Saint Mel, fifth-century Irish saint, and founder of Gibson's mother's native dioceseArdagh, while his second name, Colmcille,[12] is also shared by an Irish saint[13] and is the name of the Aughnacliffe parish in County Longford where Gibson's mother was born and raised. Because of his mother, Gibson retains dual Irish and American citizenship.[14] Gibson is also an Australian permanent resident

Agree with all you say, my post was a little bit flippant ? but I would like to think if required I would carry the tenacity and energy to endure a 12 hour flight for some quality R&R - although my intention is to be in Thailand in my 70s 80s and 90s ?

It's interesting that the mystery of declining crime rates in the USA were eventually attributed to Wade V Roe and the legalisation of abortion.

OK, no problem.

My old mate's also a smoker, the full journey (smoke-free) is about 15 hours LON-BKK, this is a big deal for him.

The one recurring theme with my friends in their 70's is healthcare, insurance cost etc

There will always be those who try to guilt trip others as they 'imagine' what 'might have been'

One of the things I enjoy about Thailand is the ability to leave the past behind and concentrate on what is happening today

My brother and his wife decided on no children - no adverse effects, have had a great life together, financially sound, retired early, still just enjoying each others company after all these years.

Struggled to understand why they subsequently bought a dog, something that demands attention and consideration, but each to their own.

No, this was real. So your saying that there can't ever have been a case like that. Also my friend is teetotal, so it wasn't told from a bar stool.

I also have a friend who has been married to a Thai lady for 30 years & still going strong, living in the UK.

I've been married for 31 years and lived here for that time. What's the problem?

Sad really, sounds like you never got around much here.

620ml bottle of lager beer 5% at 48 baht ( 110 p ) same as UK now is that because of the exchange rate.

Ah yes, but there's beer and then there's real beer - I'm in the UK currently and am paying GBP 1.65 for Ruddles at Weatherspoons, it beats the pants off anything I've ever imbibed in Thailand.

For sure...But I can go to my place 365 days of the year in a T-shirt and lug on a ciggy and not stand out in the cold and rain whilst doing so ....?

Sadly Wetherspoon's ain't on every street corner in the UK...

Weatherspoons is still cheap (2.29) but you have to sit with grumpy pensioners and the great unwashed (unemployed).

You've not been to the UK for a while, we can tell. Abbots was 2.29 but sadly no Pedigree or London Pride although Hogoblin at 3.25 is a bargain.

Never liked those places, my country pub 14 years ago :violin:was 1.10 for a pint of Tetleys draught,  it's now been turned into a house, sad UK.

On the subject of pricing in the UK.....there's a massive difference between the cost of products and services from one place to the next. I went to buy a replacement battery for a remote control which came in at 6.65 or so at B&Q, Poundland had the same product by Kodak at eight for a pound!. Three plumbers gave me quotes to swap out some taps and a tank and the prices came back at 220, 250 and 635, all for the same job. TUI (high street) quoted me 1,345 for LHR/BKK in October, BA quoted me 248, incredibly differences all across the board.

I thought that price was for smokers, they have to sit on the wing though.

And wear a free Biggles tee-shirt, the downside is that the meal choices are still only chicken or fish.
