Three Lampang villages were hit by flash floods early on Saturday following overnight heavy rains, officials said.

At about 4am, flash floods hit Ban Mae Suk village, Ban Mae Suk Nua village and Ban Mae Suk Pasak village in Tambon Wang Sai in Wang Nua district.

Officials said heavy downpours throughout the night caused the Wang River to burst its banks and inundate the three villages along the river.

The water was as high as 50 centimetres and vehicles were unable to travel on the main roads.

Udom Porsi, head of Ban Mae Suk village, said there were heavy rains throughout the night, and so he woke the villagers using the public sound system to warn them to move things upstairs. The floodwaters arrived soon after.

Later in the morning, officials from the district’s disaster prevention and mitigation office, troops from the 32nd Army Circle and officials of the Wang Nua Rescue Foundation visited the three villages to help the villagers and hand out necessities.

Must have been a lot of rain in a short period of time to cause this much flash flooding?

Didn't the forecast predict anything like this as a prior warning to the area?
