Mayor defends city hall unit in bribery scandal

PATTAYA:--Pattaya’s mayor defended a city hall unit embroiled in a bribery scandal, saying the Special Operations Unit plays a key role in keeping tourists safe.

Mayor Anan Charoenchasri said Aug. 21 that the squad, comprised of municipal regulatory-enforcement officers, works with the volunteer Surveillance and Rapid Response Team to patrol popular tourist spots in Pattaya, such as Bali Hai Pier, the lighthouse and Pratamnak Hill viewpoint.

While scenic signatures for the city, they also are a magnet for pickpockets and petty thieves, he said. The SOU officers work in shifts to keep an eye on these areas.

One Special Operations Unit officer was caught on video doing more than eyeing the tourists. The unidentified officer was seen in the video that went viral last week pocketing a 1,000-baht note from an Asian tourist he had caught littering.

They are very angry with the officer because he only asked for 1,000 baht and did not share the spoils....

They are allowed to accept "gifts" from grateful tourists for keeping them safe :whistling:

Still 'under investigation' a month later?

The fact is that the people in question get their minions to handle the cash and pass it to them later.

The issue here is that it has been caught on video, not that it is something unusual.

After reading this headline, I could n't wait to see what possible fairy-story he would come up with.  The answer is not very much; Pattaya Land Office; Pattaya Police; Pattaya taxi-drivers; can all breathe again.

One might have a smidgen of respect for the Mayor if he once in a while told the truth and announced that these people soliciting bribes are acting illegally and will be punished. Bit it never happens does it? Never, they deny and lie until the the very end.

Why would they?

Guilt, and absolution through confession is a Christian concept.

They can't deny anything once they're dead - unless they appointed a spokesman to say it was not true and they will be sued for spreading false news.
