Remove surface rust

Featured Replies

As the title says, what is the best way to remove surface rust from chrome parts of the motorcycle?

I use car polish/wax and an old green kitchen scouring pad (not metal) then buff with clean dry cloth.

Clean it more often. ?

The ultimate guide ?

I collect and restore knives so deal with surface and deeper rust a lot.

Use a very fine grit wet & dry ~ 1200 or something like this https://www.amazon.com/20Pk-Scotch-Brite-Gray-Ultra/dp/B000CQ6I7G

Then use a good quality metal polish like "flitz" and gently scrub away the rust using the above medium.

Then protect & preserve ?

I wouldn't use the abrasive type of Scotchbrite.  They can scratch.  Try lime juice (citric acid) or Coca Cola (phosphoric acid) with the aluminum foil.  Avoid salt.

Tried the coca cola... worked out a little bit.

Coke doesn't have much acid in it.  Not like phosphoric acid based rust remover/metal prep products.  Perhaps you can find some 5% vinegar.  I like Oxalic acid for light rust. Some discussion and pics here:
