I suspect kettle has only been to thailand outside of magaluf

and thus has nothing to compare samui againts. Anyone who gets excited about Tescos opening must be a sad c**8.

Kettle educate yourself and read this

www.retire-asia.com/samui.shtml

and

http://travel.guardian.co.uk/article/2006/...ews.theobserver

oh and this

note the sentence

seafood has to be imported

http://travel.guardian.co.uk/article/2006/...weekendmagazine

if you truelly cannot see that samui has been ruined

then you must be blind

in fact that don't you just go to Benidorm and leave Thailand for the people who don't like that sort of destination

FWIW, the retire-asia article is just plagerised from the Guardian ones with a little either original or from somewhere else..

Clear. Nothing wrong with a little heated debate though, SBK?

Anyway, noted. Will be toned down. Please, please do not delete any more of my rants. The last one was surely not too insulting? Just firey, t'iss all.

Agree: Samui kindergarden never closes, does it? This thread is overcooked since days already...

The last word from me. Sitting in cow shit drinking Chang beer drowned in ice bought from the local shop because the electric is not good enough to make my fridge work.

50% of Samui has some of the most most beautiful places on earth. The other 50% has some of the worst.

Good night , I am off to make a cup of tea, if the electric allows.

Excuse me LP? You seem to jump in once in a while and 'scold' us. If you do not like the content of this thread, please do not read it and refrain from posting petulant remarks. Thank you.

Yabs..... I know the Guardian article. I am familiar with the rant. If you care to search this or any other Thai forum, you will read several threads on the subject.

My opinions are not influenced by media reports. I, and all else who live here are far more qualified to offer an opinion than the author of the Guardian article.

Yes, my first trip to a developing country was Thailand. Please explain what possible difference this makes to my opinion? Had I visited India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, Inonesia amongst others prior to Thailand, my opinion would be of more value? Is that your point?

most peoples first trip outside of spain is indeed thailand and when they see there aren't quite so many fish and chip shops they are happy in their "paradise". Its always the first stop for the package tour magaluf crowd who want to experience some Kulture, hence it caters to this crwod and hence it has become a disgusting commercialised pit reminiscent of the costa dels that i am trying to avoid and where this crowd should stay.

So long as they don't get more adventurous and go to other spots of asia its fine by me.

I have been to countless tropical islands and Samui is one the most ruined i've ever seen

and thats including one in Angola. If your happy in Paradise lost then so be it, and please stay there.

I should just keep quiet. yes Samui is wonderful, please go there and leave other parts for anyone with any taste.

Mentioning Tescos has reminded me of a holiday to greece a few years back

sitting on a beautiful beach uncrowded and unspoilt and one middle aged package tourist says to me

"its quite nice ere iniit , but I really miss tescos"

sad c*** and whats even sadder is that he is probably now in samui for that very reason.

Fish and Chips anyone?

For Christ sake man get a life! Why on earth do you presume my last country of visit prior to LOS was sodding Spain? Where on earth do you get these ridiculous conclusions from?

Can you direct me to a point of reference that indicates most peoples first trip outside of Spain is LOS?

What is ‘Kulture’, by the way?

Are you suggesting that anyone who visits Samui should not explore the rest of Thailand or indeed, S.E Asia as they are cultureless, shallow, brain-dead creatures?

Your posts are getting wilder dear boy. Please post something sensible and intelligent for a change.

Honestly. Listen to yourself. :o:D

I personally respect any kind of opinions here, because everyone has it's own "taste"

and we need to respect this as a fact.

But I'm with Stick.

For one simple reason, Yabs say not jet skies ?? = never been in Samui.

Simple like that.

It's not nice see the progress destroying the nature but this kind of discussion could be apply on a very large scale, Save the World avoid the progress may be more correct for a new Yabs topic.

And yes (before you Yabs ask) I have been all over (without my mum) Spain from Malaga up to France coast, from Nice to Cannes and Provence, Greece, Lebanon, India, North and South America, Caribbean and Cuba included, Seychelles, Maldives, Turkey, Cyprus etc. etc. because I'm working for a Courier Company and my job is travel, last but not least I'm original from one of the most popular tourist destination in the world : Italy.

So I know what I'm talking about (progress, resorts, pollution...) and I know how the tourists act,

just do something good to start, when you see somebody drop paper or rubbish, call him/her and ask to collect it and bring it back to his/her original country.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers and be happy !!

I've appresiated your input on this topic, yabs, but unfortunetly there is, (1) girl that just won't or can't understand this thread and she is ruining it for ppl that would like some answers! To the mods. be it SBK, or others if would not be fair to close this thread because one persons just rants on and on about posters that she doesn't agree with. I feel there have been some good posts, as long as they've stayed on-topic. This is an open forum, but as SBK says, there are rules, and up to now she's been more than fair. Please stay on topic without the hate for others opinions. It sounds like someone is afraid of this topic, DON'T be, the tourist will not stay away because of a forum thread. But could educate ppl that are thinking of re-tiring here. IMHO.

I agree with you StickKettleOn and can only come to the conclusion you are being attacked by the serial complainers because you are not going along with their fake hippie paradise lost theme.

Just out of interest I wonder when Yabs first visited samui???

Every time I have challenged one of the bashers claims not one has come back with any evidence or sources to back up their sensational claims.

They seem incapable of posting balanced comments. Sure their have been some mistakes but also alot of the progress has been good and benefited an awful lot of Thai people.

Before I get the same accusations thrown at me for the record I have been coming here an awful lot longer then the vast majority of poeple that post on this board and I still like it that is why I am still here!

Unfortunately with a thread title 'has Samui gone to the dogs" it does tend to attract the serial complainers who belive anything they hear without bothering to check out the facts and it is left to people like you and me to give some balance so don't lose heart my friend.

you state that we have not proved our case despite all the news articles and indeed personal experiences to back it up.

All articles on Samui state the same that there are no waste water treatment plant. In fact if you knew anything about Thailand what so ever you would know that Phuket is the only island which has one and even that is overloaded.

So why don't you post something which proves that indeed samui is Still a pristine paradise and all this progress

has actually been good for the natural environment that we all go there for.

Forgive me if i'm wrong but I don't think many people fly halfway round the world to a tropical island to shop in Tescos

or eat at Subway. they go for white sands, clear, clean turquoise waters and some rustic beach bars.

Indeed thats what i go for and thats why i don't go to samui anymore.

In answer to your question i first went there 5 years ago and thought it to be overdeveloped then ans was vcery dissapointed by the murky waters, ok not as bad as pattaya but hardly bounty advert either

My trip there 3 and 2 years ago was even more disappointing. However you can be assured that the next time I want

some Tesco value bacon and or a footlong meatball sandwich Samui will be my first stop.

I know development is unevitable but what gets my goat with thailand is that with all the money they get from tourism they could at least put some money back to take care of the environment ie waste water treatment and coral reef protection but they don't. In fact even on Samet a ntional park i've seen resorts illegally dumpo raw sewage into the sea

late at night. I've complained to the park officials who happily take 200 baht from me to enter

but as usual my complaints fell on deaf ears.

Its all about max profit today and not a care for tomorrow or the tourist.

If you cannot see that this is a bad situation then you must be brain dead

Well the last sentence of your post just proves what I have thought all along about the serial complainers when they lose the arguement they resort to insults. Whilst my post may not be of the standard of Charles

Dickens I do think at least it does prove I am not brain dead as you so eloquently put it.

Wow you came to Samui 5 years ago and now you are a self-appointed leading authority on Samui and its environment congratulations you must be of the highest intelligence as by your own admission you have not even been here for 2 years.

Most of you and your fellow bashers 'personal' experiences are mostly heresay you never actually experienced them or they are just plain made up here are some examples which have been posted on this thread:

1. 10 people swept out to sea in Lamai during floods 2005 (did not happen)

2. Traffic jams on Samui (where I have yet to see one) a queue at the traffic lights or behind someone who has double parked outside 7/11 is hardly a traffic jam.

3. Local people being priced out of the market and forced out. (When I asked real Samui people what they thought of this they laughed). But then you would not know any.

4. Weekly powercuts where not in Chaweng or Bang Rak. 20 years ago it was daily powercuts but then most of you would not know that.

5. Wait till the summer when everywhere runs out of water (not true)when has this happened in the past????

6. No peaceful charming places left on samui (untrue) if you actualy left Lamai or Chaweng you would know there are plenty.

7. 90% of all Thai beaches have gone to the dogs. Source please?

8. Raped by greedy criminals. Source please?

9. mafioso families-many Thai's won't go there. Source please?

I could go on but I have a life.

As for your waste management arguement you are implying that everyone simply pumps raw sewage into the murky seas please show me where oh I forgot you have not been here for 2 years.

As for proving that Samui is still a paradise I still live here and If I thought otherwise I would 'get on my bike' and leave as opposed to posting negative messages on this forum.

One thing we do agree on is that people do not fly half way round the world to go to Tesco. But they do get on their bikes in there thousands everyday from every corner of Samui. People who live here have as much right to visit Tesco, Starbucks etc as anyone else does in their home city.

I am so pleased I have not turned into one of the I was here before you brigade and all the people that came after me have spoilt it. It was not like the 'old' days in 2002 blah blah

Some progress has been good some has been bad but lets have some balance here.

Bearing in mind you first came to Samui all of 5 years ago and have not been here for 2 years I hardly think your qualified in having an opinion.

Tourists may not come to Samui for Tescos, but what about the people that live here? It improved living standards for expats and locals alike drastically.

I'm actually looking forward to the opening of Big C.

You haven't answered your statement that the Samui beaches don't have jet skies, any explatation how you came to that statement.

Any proof of the quality of water in Chaweng or anywhere else on the island?

I posted my source about mafiosa families

If you don't want to read them then please don't come running asking for more

where are your sources proving all the others are wrong or are we just to accept the words

of some backpacker like yourself. Oh sorry samui doesn't really attract backpackers anymore it only attracts chavs.

in fact your retorts sound like Vicky Pollard

what will your next one be, "whatever".

If you think its paradise then it proves my point in that you havn't been anywhere else to compare which is a good thing.

you say i never experienced anything that i moan about.

sorry it must been my imagination all those years ago when even then chaweng road seemed like a mini sukuhumvit

and whilst swimming the sea had the visibility of a dirty bath.

I'm sure that since two years ago these things have miraculously got better after even more tourists go there and Taksin declared Samui an open field for every developer this side of the galaxy.

I believe he officially said it was an investment zone

and we all know what that means. Oh plus the fact that tourist numbers have probably trebled after the tsunami after people who usually go to phuket etc now go to samui.

I'm sure the result of this has been a return to quiet roads and crystal clear unpolluted seas.

If i were you i'd take it easy on the drugs for a while

Well said limbos and leemond. But also may I add the tourists may not come to Samui for Tesco but they do use it in large numbers.

I also cannot wait for the jet ski explanation from Yabs. He can see a piece of s**t in the sea yet fails to see or hear a jet ski hmm something not quite right there!!!!

I hate tescos

why on earth do you need to even buy food when you can eat out so cheaply

thoughts thats the whole idea of living in thailand or are you one of those poor expats who drinks outside 7/11

because you have no money.

as for the water quality

i have no need to run tests

i can see it with my own eyes and as there are is no waste water treatment plants and i havn't seen too many

trucks coming to collect waste from septic tanks it doesn't take a sherlock homes to figure out where your shit goes.

it will be run through pipes directly into the sea. sure the pipes will go quite far out but when there is back current you will see and smell it. perhaps you never go swimming in the sea between your changs outside 7/11?

As for jetskies

i never noticed any at lami a few years back or at chaweng

if they were there they must have only been a handful

if they are there now then that adds even more weight to the argument that it has indeed gone to the dogs.

i go to tropical beaches for swimming, snorkelling and diving

if i wanted to ride jetskies and shop at tescos i would stick to spain

and if thats what you like then so should you and leave tropical areas to those who like nature.

so why are you all there?
