I like to match jewelry with the person - light skin, I like yellow gold and good old red white and blue  blue sapphire, ruby, diamond,  three small stones across the top.  Simple 'promise ring'  dark skin white gold, same with two small pearls on outside with blue sapphire in middle.  They should be small and in good taste.  The real test - is the wedding ring, thats the one she will show the rest of your marriage...........I recommend diamonds, big ones.    :wai:

Right, thats what I am thinking. Must be right considering she will show that the rest of the marriage. Thanks.

I have been with the same lady for 21 years now, and we are not 'married' in the traditional sense.  I am always surprising her with different color stones rings, been doing this for all out 'married life'  I grew up Catholic, and now don't believe in the institution of marriage, as if you hang around this forum very long, you will find very negative comments to simple questions like yours.  "they only want gold, so they can sell it"  'only ask "how many baht is that"  gold is money - do you want your first loving gift to your lady to be 'money??'  not me.  My lady has more rings than she has fingers & toes, and I am always asking her when she is going to sell them, her answer is always  'never'  she still has the first ring I bought her in 1997 - a white gold ring with a 2 carat Yellow Saphire (very rare now, more fakes out there than you can shake a stick at)  if you are in Bangkok, I recommend Venus Jewlery at the end of Wireless Road - keep walking past the Lumpini Police station -  you will find a lot of pictures there of very famous people, Presidents, Kings, Generals, Prime Ministers - even me.  been going there since 1972, knew their Father.  Most people will tel you 'They are too expensive!!  yes they are, but the quality is the best in Bangkok.  Mi Dos Centavos

The only type of ring I'd spend my money on for a Thai female would be one made of aluminum.

RIP, OP's future. ????

IMO you think too much. If you are concerned, just ask her what she wants, and forget all the "face" stuff.

It's not necessary to buy an engagement ring, and while we are about it, it's not necessary to buy her from her parents with sin sod. I don't need to go into that anymore as there are loads of threads about it on TVF.

In my country it is more and more common that the bride gets a gold ring with some stone or stones (diamonds for example). Is the trend the same in Thailand

Oh, big business conning the populace, as usual.

I don't know what the "trend" is in Thailand,  but in fact, she should be happy to get anything, whatever you choose to get her.

My advice would be to go shopping with your GF in Thailand for a ring. But set a budget you can afford. If she is jai dee she will find something she likes within the budget. 30 to 50 thousand baht would be reasonable in my opinion

You can get a very nice ring for that price in Thailand

Thank you very much, Hummin. I had not seen that thread before. It will be a thai ceremony. But maybe only a small one. Her family is not into a big ceremony.

When I proposed to my wife in 2015, I hadn’t gotten a ring yet. It was sort of a spur of the moment thing. I told her, so I guess you’re going to want a ring with a big diamond, eh? She said she didn’t need a ring at all but if I wanted to get her one, a simple gold band was enough. After doing some research, I found out that thai gold is almost pure and somewhat soft. I decided to wait until she got to the US and we got married to get a ring. When she got here I took her to the jewelry store and she picked out a small 18k (no Thai gold there) yellow gold band with some tiny diamonds on it. It was only $500 USD. She cherishes that ring and wears it every day. I asked her why she never wanted a big diamond and she said Thais don’t care about diamonds, just gold. I asked her why and she said because diamonds lose their value. With gold, you can use it to eat if you need to. I had never even thought of that.

So very true, Thai's like gold, they can wear it but if they need some money they call always sell it back and not lose a lot,

At the start of the school year, may families don't have enough and they would Porn/sell or downsize  (ie from One Baht to half a baht) when they have more money they will buy again. In the West you lose so much money as its all Jewellery where here they go on the pure weight.

I bought my wife a two baht (Gold weight) necklace, she immediately went with me and exchanged it for one of half a baht weight. and gave me the balance, she said she did NOT need to show off, it was also dangerous to Flaut your money, she often shopped in the local market.

Of course Bar girls/boys would love you to buy them Gold,  the heavier the better but buy today,  gone tommorow!!

( I believe One Baht Gold is equal to 15.2 grams and the THAI Gold price is normally listed in the Thai papers everyday)

Thanks for your answer.

Yeah, it was supposed to be a surprise so she don´t know anything.

And about the loosing face issue maybe that is not the correct way to put it from my side. I just want it to be correct and for example not buy a white gold ring if the thais are not into white gold as we are in europe this days.

If I once have bought the ring it is to late to go back if you understand what I mean. Hence my question here for having the biggest chance to get it right in all details from the start. About the wedding ceremony I don´t care for now. That is step 2 and I am sure I will be told about how that works:-).

This is just the first step I have to do about the rings and shape and material and so on. Also I have seen they use to have (in my eyes) big and ugly rings. Some of them at least. Big is beautiful they are thinking because it is worth more money. That is not my cup of tee. I small hand shall not have a big, clumsy, ring. That look not good. Then better putting some diamond in it for having higher value. If that is correct to do? One ore more diamonds in the wedding ring. Is that common? Or is it more normal with a plain yellow gold ring?

There will be no engagement ring. I will go directly to the main thing ????

Next time in Thailand I will go into some shops and look there about style and so on. I just want to inform myself some before that.

cancel the wedding, my friend. You clearly do not understand Thais and should refrain from promising to live with one forever until you do. You are still too "European" in the mind. For Thais, the yellower the better, and the more they have on their bodies, the better their "face" will be. White gold? Pfffft what white gold? No such thing in Thailand. Have you ever seen white gold being sold in gold shops in Thailand? Doesn't that tell you about what the market wants and doesn't want? Doesn't take a rocket scientist...

If you choose to go forth with marrying someone from a culture you know zero about, I'm afraid the marriage would be dead in the blink of an eye. I heard it's hard enough marrying a Thai even when you're familiar with the culture, which you don't seem to understand.

She will want the biggest heaviest Thai gold ring you are prepared to buy.

There are no Thai traditions of rings, if you want to buy her any gifts, anything apart from Thai gold she will consider worthless.

if you don't want to buy her gold, a house or a car for every member of her family will be appreciated, I'm sure. Throw in a buffalo or two.

the fact that you believe that.... ???????? You know that the secret to their success with western men is their ability to tell you whatever you want to hear, right? Doesn't mean they mean it.... They often don't.

A handy tip to impress your GFs if you dont want to break the bank,

The old plumbing fittings by Prestex have 15mm, and 22mm brass olives,

these buffed up and put in a posh ring box work wonders.
