Frozen dew formed again for the second day in a row atop Doi Inthanon mountain in Chiang Mai on Saturday morning when the lowest temperature was recorded at 1 degree Celsius.

Wasan Chanthep, assistant chief of Doi Thanon National Park, said grass and the lower branches of trees were covered with a thin layer of ice.

He said the temperature at the top of the mountain was recorded at 1C while the mercury at the Kiew Mae Pan viewpoint, where tourists flocked to enjoy a sea of mist, was 5C. The Doi Inthanon park office halfway up the mountain saw the lowest temperature of 10C.

Wasan said the weather was clear so tourist could see the sea of mist clearly from the cliff at the viewpoint and the first sunlight lit up the mist beautifully for early-bird tourists.

Wasan said 2,321 tourists visited the park on Friday and the number was expected to be much higher on Saturday.

Soil, grass, cars lose heat by radiation during a clear night and can easily get a temperature lower than the air temperature. You can see this happening many times in more moderate climates. By the way "frozen dew" is called rhyme, hoarfrost or frost in English.

Rime, not rhyme. That headline looked awkward to me, too. But otherwise, good facts, so thanks.

After being a avid snow skier for close to 60 years, it really is difficult to get excited about..... frost.  It excites my wife who keeps bugging me to drive up there, but the thought of driving with the average crazed, highly aggressive Thai drivers on the road to visit some stupid 'frost' covered hill-top? I've suggested she go with some of her Thai friends.  Why she wants to drag me around with her is beyond me.  Where I used to live Doi Inthanon doesn't rate as a foothill and the view ain't nothing to write home about.  And frost- ha ha ha.  If she wants to really see a site I'd be happy to take her to the Himalayas as I'd enjoy that myself.

That's weird cause water only freezers under zero celcius.

Didn't take chemistry in high school?  Maybe they don't teach it anymore.

Who said anything about frost? It's "frozen dew" in Thailand evidently.

Kidding aside, I went on a Thai tour of India a few years back with the wife. Mainly, it was retracing the life of the Buddha, but there was a side trip to Kashmir. One day on a mountain, the Thai folks whooped it up being pulled by locals on sleds, like your dad did when you were two years old. I wanted no part of that baby stuff, so I skipped that and lunch, and rented some skis. There was a gondola. No ski patrol, because the season hadn't really opened yet. I had time for one good run through virgin powder, following the gondola line down. In case you're interested, it can be done.

Right, can you show me a website where they explain how frost/rhyme/hoarscope can happen on grass when the airtemp is 1 celcius?

The dutch websites all explain it when the temp is under zero and that i understand. I don';t understand how grass can get below zero when the air around it is 1 celcius.

I try to explain again: At night the earth cools by outgoing (infrared) radiation. That goes for the earth surface and also by objects like plants and cars. The atmosphere cools only a little bit by this outgoing radiation. The air cools most by contact with the cold earth surface and the objects. That is why the air at a clear night with little wind is coldest near the surface. The air at 1,5 m altitude, where the air temperature is measured, is warmer than the surface. So it is fairly common to see air temperatures a few degrees above zero while your car windows are covered with rime.

Yes so the air around the grass is colder than the measured temperature at a higher level...so the air around the grass was below zero right? If not than it couldn't have ice on it.

They could also have written that the temp at soillevel was below zero and it would still be true plus more attractive news for the Thai.

And this is not chemistry but physics....and yup i had that...

Pure water if not in contact with anything in the atmosphere doesn't actually freeze/solidify until it gets to around minus 40 centigrade if you want to be exact about things.

That's right, my physics teacher showed us that...he froze pure H2O which was still liquid while being under zero but when he tapped the bowl it became ice in a fraction of a second...

One basic reason for airframe icing. Called super cooled water in the atmosphere that in contact with the plane solidifies and coats the plane in ice.

Only once experienced freezing rain where the rain is still liquid but well below 0 and instantly becomes ice on contact with anything.

In the morning it looked like every car in the street had been sprayed with glass about 2 inches thick.

Similar to the photo attached.

When i was a dutch kid once we could skate to school over the roads since everything was covered in ice...it was great. Looked like the pic above except the cars didn't have so much ice.

I also remember when our dutch rivers had frozen and huge ice-plates were washed upon the shores...they were standing right up sometimes and 2x2 meters or even larger...we kicked all of them to see them shattered into pieces, will never forget it and that won't happen anymore since the winters aren't that cold  these days.
