For now, the Phoenix sits 45 meters underwater in the Andaman Sea, south west of Phuket, off Koh Racha

After the contracted salvage team threw in the towel trying to recover the Phoenix, the Marine Office says the police have taken over the project to bring the sunken vessel back to the surface. The police say it’s a necessary piece of evidence for the forthcoming court cases related to the sinking of Phoenix and the drowning of 47 Chinese tourists, including many children.

Boat salvage operations started again this morning with a crane that has arrived from Singapore. The salvage is expected to be completed in five days according to newly appointed Immigration Bureau Maj-Gen Surachate Hakparn.

A private sector company walked away from the contract to salvage the Phoenix after numerous failed attempts over two months.

cant wait for the photos

Bit of an ironic name for it that the Phoenix ..

But " Raise the Titanic " is available on Am*zon from £1,99 ( 2nd hand ) if B J needs some any tips ..

I'm sure BJ will huff, and he'll puff, and he'll blow that boat skywards...

He'll have an excuse if it doesn't happen.  The weather that the TMD has raised warnings about makes for a good believable excuse.

Is this a case of a bigger budget or significant money left from the original, whatever, plod now gets his hands on it. Brilliant.

He's going to swim down there and bring it up, setting it down right at the pier right side up and floating.

Come the next election, I'm wondering if Big Joke will be wearing a Red Shirt or a Yellow Shirt.  He's setting himself up to run for the highest bidder.

Seriously is there anything this immigration officer can't do.  Everything from personally busting people for smoking on the beach to travelling abroad to solve international crimes now he's spreading his wings to marine salvaging.  Should head up the anti corruption commission and clean up all corrupt officials and politicians before the alleged election, should be easy for this guy.

He's already working for the highest bidders, but no doubt he is in the spotlight for a reason.

This is the key phrase from the OP.

As many other posters have said, professional salvagers with the right equipment are the only way to do what should be a straight forward job.

It should be possible in 5 days, weather permitting.  It's not the Costa Concordia.

Whoever hired (profited from) the cowboys with the ropes, oil barrels and boardies should be prosecuted and made to return their ill gotten gains.

"with a crane that has arrived from Singapore.", now why did

that not happen at the beginning, time and money wasted on

a salvage company that did not know what it was doing.

regards Worgeordie

Glad to hear he is gonna get the right outfit to raise the boat. I do wonder why it is his responsibility?

'yes it looks like it will be up tomorrow' - was obviously referring to when the team could turn up.
