Wierd.

I have 2 identical Toshiba DWC130 3TB

Both failed today. Computer does not see them when I plug them in.

Also have WD externals, Seagates, all these OK

Am careful to click remove before powering down.

Toshiba website ho help

Win10 shows all drivers up to date.

Ideas ? They are only a couple years old, very little use, been in Canada last 2 years, worked flawlessly yesterday.

Both at the same time ?

More info - switched power supplies, cables with known good ones that work on my Western Digital

Laptop makes the connected sound when plug in USB, but light steady and no show on my computer.

Can not for the life of me figure how two would fail at the same time.

Same model, same age, the whole batch is likely to fail at the same time.

or

Maybe you had a power surge, and their PSUs weren't up to scratch.

Maybe an obvious question but have you done a reboot of laptop, not just restart etc but a pwr down reboot. Check if drives appear in device manager/disk drives, also in disk management (right click windows logo lhs of taskbar, disk management). Any new USB devices added to laptop ?

No power surge/brownout. Connected thru a UPS.

Work fine, removed, unplugged, put away.

Today plugged in, no show

First thing I did was power off. Unplug drives. Start, plug in drives again.

Only C drive shows on my computer when drives attached.

Disk management only shows C drive. Disc drives only shows C drive

Plug in drives, chime sounds, little USB symbol appears on Taskbar. Right click and it is there.

Yet when you go to remove it, notice appears that it can not be removed as it is in use.

All other USB external drives - I have 6 - work as they did yesterday. Some are USB powered, some are line voltage powered.

Just these Toshibas not working.

It would appear both have failed but the chances of both at the same time is very strange. A good chance the hard drives in each unit are still ok and could be accessed using a usb dock/caddy.

Clutching at straws, but have you tried powering the units direct from wall and not the UPS, maybe UPS output is a little low, out of spec etc, and the toshiba units are not tolerant to a small variation in 220v.

Have you tried to plug the HDD into another PC as advised by the other member here?

Yes. Same same

I am confident that it is not a power supply, cable, or PC issue. All other HDD work OK. Everything known good switched over and tried on both. Nada

Will be interesting to see what it is - if it can be determined

Just put it down to the continuing cost of my education !

Have you tried removing the hard drive from it's enclosure and use a USB - SATA converter to directly connect the hard drive to your computer? If you can connect with one of these devices it will prove the HD is OK and the problem may be in the enclosures. Still, two at one time?

Just a quick one, have you tried plugging into a USB 2 port and not just a USB 3 one to connect?

I have used the above Orico with great success on both 2.5 & 3.5" drives (you will need the power source for 3.5" drives). If you can see the drive through this method you then have the option of retrieving your data or trying a different enclosure if the drive is good.

Good luck; it's never a good thing when these things fail.

The drives are most probably OK, to verify, I would take the drive out of the USB enclosure and plug it directly into SATA on your PC. If you're not handy enough might ask a PC shop to do it for you. That will definitely verify if the data on the drive can be accessed.

Sorry, misread the OP. Toshiba, not Seagate... 2.5" or 3.5" drives?

Exactly How old are they?

(i have gotten free replacements for  prematurely failed drives at fortune so if they are less than 3 years old they will probably replace them for you)

If 2 died at the same time it sound like a power surge or something like that

The chances of 2 x 3TB drives dying at the exact same time from "old age, natural causes, wear and tear, coincidence etc" are close to zero

Were they in a raid arrangement or both contained different files?
