it's still slow even when using uBlock extension which can block all ads without being detected

they obviously arn't paying for a decent enough server

Has seemed a lot better over the last 24 hours but far from perfect. Agree that renting more server capacity would be the obvious solution.

And more adverts to pay for it , which will slow the site down again

Why is it obvious they are not paying for a decent enough server? Most of the ad content comes from other servers.

It amazes me they can't find out what's causing the lag every 30 minutes . Surely there must be some data gurus out there with the answers,

Ah right. This started some time ago and is getting worse, I'd look into something that was added after the CSS change, likely a DB join query/index growing out of control/etc. No quick solution except to delete things, reduce functionality and so on. Or revert to the TVF that still worked.

You mean the one that was fixed when it wasn't broken?

I came on this morning at 11:17 and apart from the :02 and :32 timers it has been OK.

OTOH as it is the weekend and perhaps there are not as many users today.

Everyone will see different adds, google analyzes everyone by their searches, the sites they visit and even what you post, so predictable anyone who researches or writes about server problems is going to get server related adds.

P.S. Almost certainly Google knows more about you than your own government.

Yes but that does not explain why people think thaivisa should invest in decent servers.

My thoughts are it is more software and database related issue, remember TV is far larger than your average forum.

Software (Invision) is the same as other well known forums, who don't have this problem. The bigger the database, the bigger the server capacity required. I can remember another forum with a relatively large database, purchasing extra server capacity a few months ago.

My thoughts too but theres also a lot of script api calls, cache system and the use of cloudflare to consider. The possible list is endless. Also got to consider how much customization has taken place.

Its the number and complexity of calls made to the database thats most important.

Not seen a 5xx today. Unusual.

Last time I praised the improvement it took two minutes to learn different

Which would, on average, be the same for all forums running a similar sized database with the same software.

I praised the improvement this morning and got a "502" a few minutes later. Still seems to be some improvement though.

Yes but the number of records in the database is not so important. A site with only 100 posts could quite easily fall over if too many people were trying to read them or the the system had a bug. The thaivisa server clearly shows it can handle its load during consistent time periods.

No it doesn't. The half hourly time slots are a bit of a red herring, it's seriously slow all of the time.

No red fish for me its fast during out of the half hour slots and unusable on the hour and half hour.

Update

14:12 - 14:23 site is loading fast even for posts back in 2004

I have noticed slight changes to esthetics of the site over time.

Modification to code maybe knocked something out of place.

Anyway, nothing like a process of elimination my dear Watson and im sure things will come back to normalcy. Good luck and happy trouble shooting techies.

Trust me, it's as frustrating for us as it is for you.

Sadly I can't offer any advice other than to avoid the forum at the top and bottom of the hour when things seem to go awry.

I mentioned a week or so ago that the delays at x.02 and x.32 are probably the result of some cron job running every 30 minutes. I would expect it to be an indexing or archiving task.

If you ignore that particular 30-minute problem the site is indeed still slow to load all the time, but that's entirely due to the massive amount of ads and spurious images. Remove those and it is quite fast.
