In the original 1960s series of University Challenge with Bamber Gascoigne, the split-screen effect of the teams sitting above one another wasn't done electronically as we would expect today.

Instead, it was achieved physically:

The two teams were seated on different levels of a specially designed two-tier set. One team was positioned physically above the other.

A carefully aligned camera shot framed both teams so they appeared stacked in a clean, split-style composition. Lighting and set design concealed the depth and structural details.
