Mayor calls on Pattaya to give up plastic, foam

PATTAYA:--Pattaya’s mayor called on residents to make New Year’s resolutions to give up plastic bags and do a better job recycling.

Sonthaya Kunplome and Samart Thiengpoonwong, director of the Chonburi Cultural Office joined city and tourism officials at the Jan. 5 opening of the Naklua Walk & Eat with a call to abstain from giving out or accepting plastic bags and foam containers, as well as separate trash for disposal and recycling.

The call echoed government policy, which was highlighted by a Jan. 9 kickoff of a new campaign to reduce waste at the household level.

Pattaya’s kickoff took place Wednesday at Chonglom Temple in Naklua.

And yet again  no mention of where the "official"  dump/recycling plant is located ???????

A solution waste plastic has a value...it can be collected and turned into oil instead of left to float around everywhere.

Good ideas and reality seldom come into fruition here.........:whistling:

YADA YADA YADA..and I have seen as many falangs abusing plastics and foam ,not to mention the locals...ask yourself AM I ONE OF THOSE ?

They ask a lot here, but demand nothing due to laziness

Yea but .. If they are smart about this all the boats with their smokey 2T engines presently anchored off the beach could replaced with ones made out of recycled Styrofoam grub containers and fitted with ecofriendly electric motors .. Might not be able to shuttle 12 Indians to Larn but its a start .. And Rome wasn't built in a day you know ..

The mayor wasn't on that job - that's his excuse anyway.

I remember many years ago when McDonald's stopped using polystyrene boxes with their burgers and went to paper and cardboard instead.. More economic and environmental sense..

I don't know why packaging manufacturers can't think in the same direction.. Probably more economic price wise and far better for the environment and what disappears in the sea..

And I'm sure it would offer a very profitable venture for an entrepreneural Thai manufacturer and far better for landfill and the environment.. IMO..

I dont think this guy has entirely understood how bags work.

Does anyone in Pattaya even use garbage cans?  I see garbage thrown on the side of streets all over the city.  Huge mounds of garbage bags piled up.  Businesses dumping their waste down sewers.

Yes I use mine every single day.

All the retailers would have to do is switch to paper bags. Obviously too complicated.

But in truth, they do not see the problem of waste, especially plastic waste. The only answer is education, but that's hard, it would require people to finish high school, at least, in impoverished areas it will never happen.

So people keep dumping their plastic at nearest corner, as long as it is out of their house, all is good.

Education. It all starts and ends there. Unfortunately there is slow start, and quick end to it here. We'll keep drowning  in waste. To do something about it would require educated leaders, but education doesn't exist here. So there - waste everywhere is a norm.

I only see litter bins outside 7-11s.

Look for plastic bags , not bins, the locals put their trash in open plastic bags in every soi. Litter bins would probably not work here, someone would steal them .

The plastic bags full of trash are being picked up every night, at least in Pattaya city by big trucks , maybe not everywhere.

Did the right thing and went out to buy a reusable bag at Tops yesterday for 29 baht.  Went to Thepprasit Night market.  Used the bag to store some of the food we bought.  Arrived home and noticed the bag was ripped along the side.  Now the reusable bag is in the garbage adding more garbage than there would have been in the first place.

Being from Canada we have been using reusable bags for many years.  Will bring some sturdy ones back from Canada next time.

. Memo to city hall think tank .....TRY PLAN B !
