When I lived in Chiang Mai, I knew a girl who collected a year-round salary from three different men.  One was a sea captain who also built her a house and another a white South African soldier.  I never met the third one.  She managed to schedule things so they didn't run in to one another.  She wanted me to be her local farang.  She was at loose ends with two small children and not really knowing what she wanted to do with her life.  I felt rather sorry for her.  She was good-looking and of at least average intelligence.  Perhaps that's why her girlfriends did not help her to stabilize.  If you read the various book by professional researchers such as "Patpong Sisters," it seems that relationships with other bar girls and boys form their relationship universe. They certainly can't trust fickle farangs.

The guys who pay their GF a salary are those who are not comfortable with the 'type' of employment or financial gain their girlfriend would otherwise seek 'elsewhere'..... (you can read between the lines there)....

 

OR, their girlfriend is uneducated / not sufficiently qualified to get a decent job and the Western BF considers working in a factory or 7-11 etc below them... Sometimes a guy may not want his GF out at work all the time and wants someone at home with them, in which case the salary may be replacing a crappy 10,000 baht per month factory job etc... 

 

 

 

Of all the guys I know in perfectly normal relationships none of them have ever paid their girlfriend a salary. Their girlfriends / Wives already have decent jobs. 

 

The only time money is paid as a pseudo salary or into a shared account is when children come on to the scene and the Wife has had to give up work - this is also common in the West.

plenty of girls makes 80k just from tip & lady drinks in go-go bars, before they even go with customers

after a while its like paying reverse alimony  ( very little return on the investment)

Lucky you.  Mine cost me child support for 3 kids - 18 years and a half a million dollar house.

My wife when I was 31 asked me two buy her a house.  She was cute and the kids well mannered.  And the judge said she got the house to raise those cute kids.  I don't think I was that ugly bute 50,000 baht is really a drop in the bucket to what it cost me.

Maybe you should know me before going off on me.  Wife told me she could not have children.  Ha ha ha joke on me.  Two of the kids were not mine but I paid child support.  Ha ha joke on me.  I was unhappy when she kicked me in the crotch on the way back from the church and said straighten up kiddo now you are married (we had an open relationship which involved a couple of her girlfriends and wild drunken parties at clothing optional resorts all over the country).  She made three times as much as I did as soon as we got a divorce.  Ha ha ha joke on me.  She married her millionaire boyfriend shortly after our divorce and he came with 6 cars and 3 homes all over the world.  But she collected child support every month every penny.  Why should I be bitter?  But I had it easy compared to a couple of Aussie mates of mine.

No, what that is is an honest relationship for a change.  It is one of the cultural nice parts about Thailand and you don't have to fake it like the West.  Normal Thai girls do expect to be paid - sin sod and allowance and clothes and house and so on....

Apologies for the harsh response - you are correct I don't know you. But I have heard the excessive bias coming from a couple of guys who've gone through or are going through a divorce, knowing both sides of the story I know both sides expect much more and want to give up much less... Stories often become extremely exaggerated and told so often both parties start to believe their own exaggerations... 

 

Did you adopt two of the children? If not, Did their father not have to pay Child support?

 

Open relationship, wild drunken parties, optional clothing, at resorts all over the country... and now agreeing to pay 50,000 baht per month for a girlfriend......   it sounds like you had a good time while you were having a good time...  certainly not waiting or costing you anything, it seems you had one hell of an experience and good stories to tell....

Although most of the replies I've read are just mocking, the answer to your question is YES. If you want a Thai GF you have to pay. 

How much you pay is up to you ( and her ).

 

She isn't going to be your GF because she "loves you". She could be making big money on a nightly basis, so you have to compensate her for loss of earnings.

Complete rubbish. Not everybody is paying his "gf". Plenty of non bar girl relationships around. Off course there are still massive cultural differences which affect relationships and families. If you are looking for advice on this subject from the regular men-clown here, you won't get much insight. You are young enough to explore TH and venture away from the bar scene. Make your own experience and find an independent, smart girl that has Western views. Maybe also look at some other Asian countries. TH is  far, far from what it used to be 25 years ago and I would never consider living here, had i just arrived. Great options about.
