A deputy Phitsanulok police chief was killed when a highway police car leading a royally sponsored merit-making motorcade was hit by a pickup truck in Phitsanulok’s Wang Thong district on Thursday.

A woman passenger in the pickup was also killed and her husband, the driver, was severely injured in the accident at 10am on the Phitsanulok-None Maprang road in Moo 8 village in Tambon Tuenthong.

Col Arkom Changplaikaew, deputy Phisanulok chief, was killed in the back seat of the highway police car. Two policemen, the driver and the front passenger, were severely injured.

Arkom was leading a motorcade taking Phitsanulok governor Pipat Ekphaphan, and Pol Lt Gen Sakolkhet Jantra, one of the Grand Chamberlains of the Bureau of the Royal Household, to make merit on behalf of His Majesty the King at Wat Pa Nong Thap Rua temple in Phitsanulok’s None Maprang district.

The grand chamberlain was taking monks' robes and necessities granted by the King to monks, who are older than 90, to Luangpu Lee Thawaro, 94, at the temple.

Police said the pickup cut in front of the royal motorcade.

But it say the pick up cut in front. Yet the police car an the pickup suffered major frontal damage. So either after cutting in front the pick up braked hard and did a u turn  in which case the police car driver should have taken a precautionary measure anyway, or else the story is wrong

The on coming pick up cut in front of the police car...

The pics would indicate that the impact was on the side of the the police car - thus the on coming pick-up seems to have cut across the central line into the oncoming police accord.

Looks like very nasty, and yes, perhaps that Policeman who passed was not wearing his seatbelt while sat in the rear if the two in the front survived, albeit with serious injury.

There's also a hole on the passenger side in the windscreen of the pickup truck - no seatbelt again?

leading a royally sponsored merit-making motorcade was hit by a pickup truck

oh, the irony.

years ago i was on the first date with a thai lady, she went to the shrine at central world where you make merit for a successful relationship, a lot of red roses etc. anyway 10 days later the relationship was over due to her lying. i thought; maybe spend less time making merit for a successful relationship and put the effort into behaving in a normal honest way.

no point making merit for a long and successful life if you're not going to take care and attention when driving, especially in thailand.

Seat belts are not necessary with Buddhist amulet dogma ingrained, no need. If people are injured or killed then just the wrong amulet. Nothing to blame a Thai driver for doing, or not doing, because as we are all aware of, they know all things known to man, Michelin man that is !

no seatbelt worn in the back seat?

and this sadly reinforces that the locals ignore red lights (even flashing ones)

and shows so called hi-so influentials dont have the concept of safety either

It is a truck.  Look at the last photo in the original article.  It appears the truck was on the correct side of the road when it was struck.  Of course the motorcade will never be blamed.  In the last photo look at all the vans in the motorcade.  They appear to be on the wrong side of the road.

When he recovers he's going to realise the pain has just begun!

I have seen official motorcades screaming through pratumnak and jomtien like it was formula one.  How can these vip's even feel safe in their vehicles with lunatics driving like that?

On the other hand, I was once with a VIP who was escorted from Don Mueang airport in Bangkok to Pattaya late one night, and I was frustrated that they drove slowly, within the speed limit. Took two hours.

Only happened to me twice in my province but this a-holes drive up the middle of a 2 lane road with lights on and red lights above twirling. They expect you to move into the hard shoulder for them, even though they could very easily stay on their own side.

In my experience, the lead car was coming up the middle, there was no hard shoulder for me to go to and so I held firm, put on my full beams and leaned on the horn. He did move over as did the rest but the finish car turned and followed us.

Pulled us in and then started to berate me for not pulling in. The wife got stuck into him asking who the F##k did he think he was and asked who was in the motorcade and why he needed this nonsense. Local politician returning from meeting! That was it! No need for these pricks to be doing this.

Tucked his tail and got back in the car. ???? Richards the lot of em!
