Video: "Farang kep khaya khrap!" - Foreigner collecting trash

An online video taken by a taxi driver in Bangkok showed a foreigner collecting trash from the central reservation of Rama IV road and putting it in a black bin bag.

 

The taxi driver exclaims: "Farang kep khaya khrap" - It's a foreigner collecting trash. 

 

The driver even backs up on the main road to get a better view of the action.

 

He doesn't seem concerned that this might cause an accident - getting the video is the important thing!

 

JS 100 Radio called it "wonderful" and said that this was downtown Bangkok near Chulalongkorn Hospital. 

 

Most Thai posters agreed with the great majority saying: We made the mess - don't you feel embarrassed that it is a foreigner picking it up?

 

Pornpol Boripun went further suggesting such actions as these were why "their countries" were so much more developed than ours. 

 

No one in the first few dozen people commenting referred to the oft stated idea - on Western forums -  that such actions require a work permit.

Why not in Pattaya, why no lady thai?

Fair play to the guy for wanting to keep the place clean and tidy. We have seen many instances off foreigners picking up rubbish on beaches and other places. If picking up rubbish was a job reserved for Thais only, God only knows how much of a mess the place would be.

I think we all know how that would work out. The locals would stand around applauding you while you did it, then applaud the immigration police for arresting you for no work permit when you have finished.

Basically, there is plenty of rubbish everywhere because the Thai administration

does not want to spend enough money to clean up.
Every foreigner who walks and cleans the garbage must have some kind of brain damage.

 

Stop treating the Thais like children, they have enough money.
buy submarines and an aircraft carrier or 5,000 refuse collection vehicles...issue of priorities and management.
If it is not a priority for them then why is it for you !

Kudos to the guy but I have to admit, cynical old me is always slightly sceptical of people who do good deeds in an obviously ostentatious way, Matthew 6,1 and all that - "Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven." (KJV).

I really don't see the point, he is obviously looking to get likes and shares on Facebook,  there is no other reason for this insanity!  With all the problems the Thai government make for foreigner's, this guy picks up their trash, maybe he likes being whipped like a bitch as well? this is a government responsibility! 

I wouldn't lift a finger for Thailand, too risky. There's always some idiot that will report you for working. 

 

 

Maybe when they round up all the hookers on Beach Road they could give them all a black bag and get them to collect all the crap (excluding themselves) instead of the pathetic 100 baht fine they get now.

i pick up rubbish in my area...i get the weirdest looks from thai people..im sure that they think im ting tong...

occasionally a motorbike toots and i get 'thumbs up'...

How many on the planet 7+ billion humans ?

what I’d say 10% of us did 5 minutes of this every day what impact would it have on rubbish spread?

of course it would go into big piles of rubbish instead of millions of small piles but it bodes for maybe someone recycling the big piles ???!!!

I could have understood that if written in Thai.  Transliterations suck.  Had to look at the article to understand what was meant by kep khaya khrap or gep kaya krap.  Collect trash.

In the US I'd routinely pick up the small amount of trash I'd find when hiking.  Here in Thailand?  Gawd!  Better off driving a trash truck than hiking!

Sorry, but I take exception to the fact that you say every farang who picks up rubbish must have some kind of brain damage!!!

 

You have obviously never heard of doing your 'civic duty'.

 

I picked up rubbish in the UK and deposited in the nearest bin.  I also clean a small portion of the beach where I go four days a week.

 

attitudes like yours make me want to VOMIT!!!

This is why Thailand needs more tourists - to clean up after the locals. The peoples apathy and disregard for their own country is quite disturbing.

My country has gone from dirty to clean in 30 years..no clowns needed ...

an efficient administration was enough !
One thing comes to mind when I see a foreigner collecting trash on the beach

or on the road in Thailand .... "stupid is who stupid does"

I drove a few kilometers outside of Phuket into a side road last weekend 
beautiful view, mountains in the ocean but when I was driving something

started to stink, I go on and look around and there behind the trees 100-200 meters from the bay, from this blue water,a rubbish dump like a football field probably protected only by trees.

 I can show you where it is on the map ... and you can go there
and enjoy collecting what the wind will blow around back to the pile.

I picked up plastic and trash on Pattaya beach last year and it actually made it on Thai visa Facebook page, someone must of took a pic of me and posted it on a Pattaya Facebook page..anyway, the reason I did it was because I got the idea from a Thai friend and I was bored and didn’t want to sit in a bar all day doing nothing, I felt like working, and I love Thailand so why not help out, I never expected to have my picture taken be on social media, I wasn’t attention seeking at all, the Thais really appreciated me, I was given free water, free coconuts, some farang guys gave me money, people started to join in and help me, even the hotel receptionist where I stayed recognised me from the Pattaya Facebook page, it was a really cool experience. 

Leaving aside the questions of work permits, socially acceptable, and so on, I have one observation. He is walking illegally in the central reservation that is closed off by armco barriers. Surprised one of the diligent hard working local plod didn't fine him.

Open ya eyes !

I and a couple of expat friends in Hua Hin are about to start cleaning up our local roads of plastic waste. 

We have no desire to be Facebooked or the subject of news items, however if that occurs and encourages Thais or others to chip in and do their bit, or simply remember us and think twice before ditching plastic on the roadside then we have achieved something positive.

 

We have time to commit to a few hours per week, we are alert to the sensitivities of offending locals and we hope that we might encourage others to follow our lead.

 

Of course it may only result in cleaner surroundings locally - a bonus regardless. 

 

Good on the guy who is the subject of this article and brickbats to those who have nothing sensible to say and spend their days spewing negativity on this and every other issue on Thai Visa. 

Have work permit ??
