Pattaya is dead now

I have been coming to pattaya for the last 4 years in may / june. It just seems to be getting quieter. I know bar owners in soi buakhau and soi honey who probably wont make it to high season.

 

What do you think is going to happen with the makeup of pattaya in the next few years?

Pattaya has become so polluted over the years that my body has developed a strong allergy response to the air and water.  Until they clean it up I see no reason to return.

Pattaya's decline may be bad news for the rest of Thailand as like rats abandoning a sinking ship...the lowest excuse for human beings will be scattering throughout the country...bring their no-morals criminal minds with them...yikes!  ????

On the contrary, Pattaya now is being 'discovered' by the Chinese now who buys properties and business there with cash, so when the Pattaya falls out of flavor with one group of people, there will always be another who think that Pattaya is a wonderful place to live and invest...

Wrong title. Should be "Soi Buakhao is dead now", but Pattaya is booming, thanks to real tourists, not sex tourists.

 

Soi Buakhao is a very special street. Many cheap accommodations nearby, mainly massage places and bars, bars, bars... A place where you can see nearly 24/7 old fat Cheap Charlie farangs drinking beer while watching the horrible traffic in this Soi… What an exiting life and Soi! Not a bad thing for Pattaya if Soi Buakhao is dying... IMHO.

Demographics. Jomtien usual haunts of bars and massage are totally empty. Boats and coaches in the mornings full with Chinese. Low XE, greed and bad customer service has been the Demise of the traditional businesses Pattaya/Jomtien have been known for. When a bar with six girls looking at their phones ignoring customers charge almost 3 quid for a skanky bottle of Thai lager, what do they expect?

When I first starting coming Soi Buakhao and Honey didn't exist as a venue. We had Americans coming ashore from their aircraft carrier, then in the 70's and 80's the West Germans ran the show to be replaced by Arabs with their oil wealth from the Gulf States, then the Russians until the currency crashed and now its the Chinese and Indians. The Thais just take your holiday money and move with the times. Nothing dies here.

OP, go out today and visit tiger park, underwater world, floating markets, Nong Nooch gardens, sanctuary of truth, or even the markets in soi buakhau when they are on. You will see a pattaya thats not exactly dead, in fact very busy with tourists.

Empty bar stools in soi buakhau isnt exactly and indication of tourism in Pattaya.

The yearly low season death thread.

 

Pattaya's been declared dead since at least 2007: Pattaya's Dead. In TVF, that is. You may find death announcements going back a decade earlier in the Pattaya Mail.

 

Then as now our ace TVF Economists conducted the yearly interviews w/ business owners who declare business down 50% year-on-year. Suppose average small business profit then was B100,000/mo. Now it's down to B12/mo. ????

 

Yet the corpse of Pattaya still gets perpetually exhumed, declared DEAD, autopsied, and then reburied again . . . and again . . . and again . . . right up to the present day. Ghoulish, innit? Especially if you don't even live here, LOL. Here's my simple question: Why can't the dead rest in peace?

It is indeed dead and getting worse year by year. 

 

There is no one here at all, including no Chinese.

 

my commercial laundry shop has just laid off 60% of its staff and saying possibly will close down in the next few months if it does not pick up.

 

some places have closed down for a month as no customers at all.

 

its hard to say why no one is coming but I would say bad exchange rate, bad attitude of service staff, high prices, and yes attitude of girls would be the reason, plus immigration hassles and questioning. 

 

Many offshore workers who use to be here on every rotation off do not come as immigration giving them hell and demanding they get “proper” visa’s

Anyone planning on doing that really should visit the ATM first, especially if they will be paying the extra farang price.

    Yes, thank you, indeed, for keeping the 'Pattaya is Dead' thread alive for yet another year.  I've lost count of all the many, many years Pattaya has been either 'dead' or 'dying'.  Any, yet, here we are.  Great reply by Pattaya46, by the way. 

    You must have missed my post last week describing my horrible experience going to Central Festival on a SUNDAY, in late May.  What was I thinking???  Had to fight my way to the very last available table at Fuji and then it literally took a full hour to get out of the parking garage.  Isn't this suppose to be low season?

    Pattaya, of course, isn't dead or dying; it's ever growing and changing.  But, to see the growth and the changes, you need to spread your wings and go beyond Soi Buakhao. Check out what is happening in Wong Amat.  Check what Amari is doing in north Pattaya. Check everything going on in Jomtien, Pratamnak, and Cosy Beach. 

    Just noticed the other day that something probably ticky tacky has been torn down on Pattaya Beach Road and there is now a fairly sizeable empty lot.  Likely something nicer is going to go in there, maybe a boutique hotel, just one more addition to Pattaya's evolution and transformation.  And the beat goes on.

Most tourist places around Pattaya allow reduced price for people with a Thai Driving Licence, those with a non tourist visa, or those who buy their tickets online beforehand.

Seems to me to be quite busy. Here on the darkside there's a very noticeable increase in traffic and people over the past couple of years. Maybe that's where all the Pattaya regulars are going. Hope not (joking). On my regular rides around the seaside district, I see the normal high volume traffic with an incredible number of tour buses for the hot season. Not sure how all of this translates into business for the bars, but my passing observation is that it's not all doom and gloom (perhaps in some select areas).

 

Let's see if a casino or two will open soon. In the current climate (I shan't expand) there will likely be less moral objection to them.

Only some do, and even with the discount the prices are still very high for what you get.

 

Overpricing is what will drive people away from Thailand. Why come here and be ripped off when you can go to somewhere nice like Portugal and pay less? Better weather too.

A list of queues I stood in or places I couldn't find a car park, yesterday in Jomtien "ghost town".

 

Macro, no parking anywhere near the store entrance, waited 5 minutes in a queue for a free checkout, with all check-outs staffed.

 

Foodmart, no parking and waited in a queue for a check-out.

 

Post office queued out the door, had to double park while the wife posted some packages.

 

Jomtien night market, waited for customer in front to be served before we could order our food, then all the seating was full so we had to eat over on the beach.

 

Traffic was pretty busy, all those full baht buses tend to slow things down.

The tourists in those tour buses stay at out-of-town hotels owned by Chinese. They eat in groups at restaurants owned by Chinese. They block the roads very effectively but dont actually spend much money in individually run establishments.
