BKK governor says he is ready for prison if corruption found in incinerator project

Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang announced Wednesday that he was willing to go to prison if it is proven that there is corruption in City Hall’s plan to build two waste incinerators, worth an estimated 13 billion baht.

He also denied that the recent resignations of two deputy governors, Mr. Chakkapan Piew-ngam and Mr. Thaweesak Lertpraphan, were related to bidding for the construction of the two incinerators, at On-nuj and Nong Khaem in Bangkok, saying that the two quit due to health problems and their wish to take a rest.

The governor insisted that the City Administration had not yet decided which of the bidders for the project will be awarded the contract. He added that the city administration had strictly complied with the guidelines set by the Comptroller Department regarding contract auctions and that the bidding process had been approved by the National Anti-Corruption Commission, the Office of the Auditor-General and the Central Administrative Court.

It takes a good man to be involved in corruption and then be willing to go to jail if caught for it.

With 13 billion swishing about a Bangkok Governor is almost certainly in a position to improve his financial status with a nod here or a wink there. Past experience would show a lot have and so far I don't remember one who found himself incarcerated for his involvement. Are we on the verge of something new?

Going on past records of prevAswin Kwanmuang ious governors, no such thing as no corruption, rort or nepotism in such high positions simply because the people who helped to elect them into such powerful position expect very much for a return favors in kind,

should this guy be found not guilty, most likely it will be because either him, his bosses or his benefactors are powerful enough to quash the charge, time will tell...

For the record Aswin Kwanmuang was appointed Bangkok Governor by PM Prayuth using his self-granted, absolute power. So effectively Asawin is only a puppet and PM Prayut is the de facto Governor of Bangkok.

At the appointment Aswin was reported as saying ..."An order is an order. Our duty is to say ‘yes sir."

That statement confirms he is only Prayut's stooge.

PM Prayut pulled the same stunt in Pattaya. He appointed the "well known for the wrong reasons" Sontaya Klunplome.

I'm no expert but surely a near 0.5 billion usd price tag for 2 incinerators is quite steep..

Or am I wrong to assume such excesses.

Probably they wanted to stay alive.
