interesting …..  years ago, say mid 60's 70's even 80's  you never really heard of street violence or gang related stabbings.   I believe it was because most youth were raised to respect society, the police and older folk in general,  and your parents would go ballistic if you got into any serious trouble.

As a youth, I knew what was right and what was wrong …….

Agreed, when i was a lad about 50/60 years ago i found a dead grass snake and found it funny to throw it at the girls as we got of the school bus, that evening the village policeman rode up to the door and i got a right telling off from him, but that was nothing to what i went through after he  had left,  bringing a policeman to the door indeed.

Agreed. I don't like the idea of the government knowing where and how I spend my money. I prefer to pay cash whenever possible. If they go to a cashless society, then like the internet, they can just

That’s what he will be doing when his Mum chucks him out.

Still there are plenty of empty shop fronts.

Perhaps rent is cheaper in Thailand, but for what? Looking at a sea that you can't swim in? Breathing hazardous air, garbage laden streets, tap water that is not safe, dirty food, the most dangerous roads in the world, what about the other things u didn't mention, food more expensive in supermarkets, booze prices etc etc etc.

corrupt police, visa rules.

I get back to the UK for six months each year and it's great to have the contrast and variety. For us, UK grocery shopping is much cheaper than Thailand, Wetherspoons does a decent pint at a sensible price plus our utility bills are quite cheaper between May and September. A decent bottle of wine doesn't have to be expensive in the UK, the choice of goods is much wider plus it's good to feel the change in season rather than the constant heat, it makes you appreciate both more. Travel can be pricey but if you buy travel discount cards and pick your journey carefully it can be fairly inexpensive. I wouldn't want to be there between November and April but the rest of the year can be good, nice to see the Dales and the Lakes which are nearby, there's no scenery like it anywhere else in the world. And wandering around 1,000 year old castles, how magical is that, Thailand has done a poor job of protecting its heritage. And the wife loves it, she gets to cook in the flat we own and all the food supplies from Thailand are easily available at a decent price, after we leave we rent the flat out for six months and that supports our stay in Thailand, it works for us. BTW, I've been in Thailand full time for almost twenty years, the change is perfect for me.

I will admit that I have been looking to buy a second home in the US and spending half the year there.. for many of the same reasons.  Basic wine and steak seems so special after living here full time for 6 years.  Even good steak fries.. cheap as chips, no pun intended, in the US.. 800 Gram bag is 55 THB... the shoestring they serve here are more like prison food.  Pop's 200 dollar Internet TV bill is nothing to sneeze at, and for 250k, they are 80 miles from DC ( a good thing), but there are numerous Africans in their hood, but no crime.

How easy do you find it to do that - IE find suitable new tenants for only 6 months and the check in/check out etc?

Do you manage it all by yourselves including advertising?

It's been surprisingly easy. The flat is a one bed for over 55's, in Lancaster. I do a managed let via an agent and for the past two years they have found me a tenant within one month, the agent handles everything.  I rent out at 500 Pounds per month, that lets me off from having to pay utilities and Council Tax so there's cost avoidance in all of that, the agent takes 59 Pounds per month, for me that's a great deal. I rent the flat unfurnished, the basic furnishings we have there get stored in the attic which is then locked (mostly kitchen stuff, an IKEA foam mattress, bedding and towels). My two tenants thus far have been older women who are divorcing and wanted a stop gap measure until everything was finalised, no problems whatsoever for me, touch wood. Plus the Council gives me two months free from Council Tax each time I rent out, one month before and one month afterwards, that handles the overlap between me and the tenant - water company doesn't charge if you tell them the flat is empty, heat is all electric which is never on in the summer of course.

Clothes in both the UK and Thailand are about the same price . Although the cheap clothes in the UK tend to be better quality than the cheap clothes in Thailand and its easier to find Westerner sized clothes in the UK

Just wondering what type of visa those people only spending part of the year (6 - 8 months) In Thailand find most useful, given medical insurance and money in the bank requirement?

Insurance isn't required for those on extensions.  Very rarely, have I heard of anyone having a problem using a retirement extension to live half the year here..maybe even more rare than someone being told fixed deposits aren't allowed.  But, even if you work online here 50 hours per week, and work 70 hours per week back home.. the one and only answer to ever give about your occupation is Retired.. because by their logic, retirement extensions are for those, who are retired.. why would you ever contradict that to immigration?

Retirement extension.
