Electric Light Problem

Featured Replies

I have just changed 2 60W light bulbs for 5W LED bulbs.

Having screwed in the first one, I checked and all OK. When I removed the 2nd 60W bulb and put in the 2nd 5W LED both bulbs "glowed" even though switched off. Help and advice required please.

It's because your 'neutral' has volts flowing through it.

LEDs don't need much to work.

Are both lights on the same switch?

Yes

It would seem that the switch is switching neutral /negative instead of the live/positive....

Yeah, I'd go with you having a switched neutral too.

If you can't re-wire then get a fan motor capacitor (about 1.8uF) and put it across one of the light fittings, your glow should magically disappear.

IMPORTANT NOTE You must use a 250V AC rated capacitor, fan motor capacitors are of the right type and readily available.

Are these normal 5W LED or the Emergency Light type (with built in battery back up during power failure)?  Have had strange things happen using them in a circuit (ordered by mistake as seem to sell as cheap or cheaper than normal lamps).

Just the normal ones. I think what Crossy and others have said is that the problem is a crossed neutral. Will see how accessible the wiring is, and hopefully correct it.

Thanks to all for your input.
