Guideline on charges of tourist guide service approved

The board of Tourism Business and Guides has approved the guideline on minimum guide service charges for three types of tourists - outbound tourists, inbound tourists and domestic tourists, said Thaweesak Wanitcharoen, director general of Department of Tourism today (November 19). 

 

Thaweesak said the rates were in line with the policy of Minister of Tourism and Sports, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, to prevent tourists from being exploited in spending and service charges by tour businesses and guides.

 

“After the approval, the sub-committee will consider ways to improve the Tourism Business and Guide Act, B.E. 2551 (2008) in order to enforce it as a law ,” he said.

 

The approved minimum guide service charges for outbound tourists range from Bt1,600 to 9,000 per person (three days and two nights), exlcuding airline ticket price.

 

For inbound tourists, the charges are: a minimum of Bt800 per person per night (Asean), Bt1,000 (Asia), Bt1,500 for others.

 

Domestic tourists will pay a service rate of Bt300 each for non-overnight stay, Bt600 per night for overnight stay. The charges include accommodation and transportation fees.

How would minimum charges prevent tourists from being exploited? Shouldn't the ministry specify maximum charges instead if tourists' protection from exploitation is the declared goal? I don't get it. Or am I misunderstanding something?

Well, if they enforce this then it will be a first here. Maybe it is the start of something bigger. Coming to a town near you soon, enforcing the law on driving standards, licenses, helmets, seatbelts, using mobiles when driving, drink driving, speeding, yawn....overloaded trucks, speeding and unroadworthy buses, yaaaaawn, illegal burning of fields, illegal pesticides, et al ..................zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

What is this about? Inbound, outbound? Sounds like dual pricing on steroids. I dread to think what the maximum prices are.

Do the tourists get a stick on badge so those fleecing them of money know what to charge?

What is an inbound tourist and what is an outbound tourist?

 

Does this imply that Thai guides are allowed to travel with a Thai group travelling out of the country and, I assume, work.

 

Does that mean not all countries only allow their own nationals to act as tour guides? ????

Dual pricing has gone to Tri pricing depending whether farang, asian or asean.. More price exploitation for inbound tourists.. Does TAT want to continue to kill Thai tourism?? 

 

Reads very confusing with inbound, outbound and domestic and min. charges.. What does it all mean anyway? 

The Chinese absolutely love huge crowds wherever they go. They feel it's not "lively" if there's a peaceful beach somewhere. I told one that I like American supermarkets because there are so many of them, and it's not overpopulated (except New York), so it's quiet and uncrowded. She said but "lively" is better.

The article is poorly written, but I think the goal is to set realistic prices so as to avoid the phenomenon of zero-dollar tours, where a company charges unsustainably low tour prices, and then makes its profit by dragging tourists to hard-sell ripoff stores that pay kickbacks to the guide. But that's just my guess.

An outbound tourist is someone who's pockets are empty & he still doesn't know what he paid for!

And yet the tourists keep coming in ever increasing numbers despite the strength of the baht.

TAT is clearly not as savvy as you when it comes to national and international tourism strategies.

How could minimum charges prevent anybody from being overcharged ?
TAT should better keep an eye on drivers of songtaews and Grab "taxis" who sell overpriced trips without having tour licences.

They make lots of rules in Thailand, but nobody enforces them ???? to lazy, don’t care no pride in work, jobs, success or country

1. Thai. 2. Asean. 3. Asian and most expensive lol 4. Farang

That is of course because Farang are whiter and don't need to spend as much on whitening cream lol.

Just another indication to the populace that scamming, ripping people off is governmentally acceptable and promoted: public parks, hospitals, now tour guides what next Tesco, Tops etc? The sad thing is I am being serious and it may not be that far off. They cry and wonder why Western tourists are down......
