Public hearing reveals 75 per cent are against 3 chemicals ban

The ban on 3 agrochemical substances namely Paraquat, Chlorpyrifos and Glyphosate as passed by the Hazardous Substance Committee’s resolution on October 22 will come into full effect on December 1, according to the order of Department of Agriculture (DOA) announced in government gazette on November 18. The order also states that come next month, anyone who has any of the substances in his/her possession must inform the DOA within 15 days.

Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit in his capacity of president of Hazardous Substance Committee said on Friday (November 22) that the committee will hold another meeting on November 27 to consider alternatives to the 3 banned substances for use in agriculture.

During an interview with the “Inside Thailand” TV programme, Suriya said that the Department of Agriculture has recently submitted its report on the effects the ban will have as well as the results of public hearing on the topic to the Hazardous Substance Committee. “The public hearing revealed that 75 per cent of 48,789 samples are against the ban, while only 25 per cent agree with the ban,” he said. “Moreover, the DOA reported that they are still unable to find suitable substitutes for the 3 chemicals, which prompted the committee to hold another meeting next week.”

“I cannot say with certainty if the banning will be immediately effective on December 1, as the committee will consider effects and consequences from all sides again in the next meeting,” added Suriya. “If the meeting agrees that we are not ready to ban the substances, then we will postpone it. However, if the meeting upholds its previous decision, aid measures will be issued to help those affected by the ban.”

Meanwhile, Agriculture Permanent Secretary Anant Suwanrat said that after extensive study, the Department of Agriculture is proposing that the banning of 3 substances should be postponed at least 6 months. “This is to allow time for farmers and manufacturers who still have those chemicals in their stocks, which is estimated at more than 38,000 tonnes nationwide,” he said.

Let them take a swig of those chemicals, perhaps they'll change their mind.

The odds are they are the majority of farmers, they dont want

change, just want to go on polluting the land and themselves,

I think the Government should have found a solution first

before a complete ban, those poisons need banned no doubt,

but what are the farmers going to use to kill pests and weeds

are there any alternatives that will work, and can be brought

to the farmers quickly,I feel a U-Turn could happen, as farmers

are need by political parties as they carry a lot of votes, then

there is the lobby of powerful chemical companies.

Pesticides have eliminated bees in our area and we have never had a problem with pests but people spray just in case rather than reacting to any actual pests.Weeds we remove manually by paying locals which helps the local economy and not the big companies who push these dangerous products by scaring farmers with doom stories and sales pitches.

I never believe numbers I haven't falsified myself. Who carried out this poll? Who was interviewed?

I can see this ban being shelved before it comes into effect in December. Sadly.

No one's drinking or eating it but feel free to do so if that's what trips your trigger

Most people are, if they don't grow their own fruits, vegetables etc.

I don't believe that statement is truthfully reflecting what the public wants in this case, and I hope they are resolute concerning this banning decision..

The government could buy back the 3 banned chemicals from the farmers.

I think it would be a good move to delay the ban until all the stock is exhausted.

So out of 48k surveyed, 75% are against the ban, most likely due to misinformation or farmers taking part..

Yet on the Prayut popularity poll recently taken, only 1600 were surveyed nation wide.. Giving a 93% thumbs up to the PM's performance..

Great to see where the priorities are for accuracy.. 5556..

This survey was conducted in a rented room in Bang Bon..!

There was a website for all parties to express their concerns.

That is where there the numbers would of came from.

Thai visa votes didn't count.

and the public is an expert in this country about what exactly the last 2000 years ?

phd in environmental science ? chemistry ?

ah, farmers want to use it because they were lied to it would improve yield

why not go back to DDT ?  or, wait...

ok people, not a joke question:

how many of you SPRAY against termites in your CONCRETE house ?

is it because everybody does it, so do you ?

do termites not live on WOOD, which is absent in your concrete floors, walls, etc ...

I do not spray, since crazy ex left and had  ..... drum roll ....0 termites, as I had 0 termites before but ex insisted to spray anyway

hard to win an argument with a CRAZY person
