Navy renders assistance to cruise ship stuck on underwater rocks

KRABI: The cruise ship, La Belle Des Oceans, carrying 150 passengers and crew, has hit underwater rocks and is unable to move southeast of Phi Phi Island, reports the Royal Thai Navy.

 

A Royal Thai Navy officer told The Phuket News this morning (Nov 25) that the navy’s Third Area Command received the call for assistance at 9:30am, though the ship struck bottom last night.

pretty sad in this day and age to hit some rocks near any civilized mapped and chartered waters and with GPS navigation systems.  They just do not cost much and really are very accurate and not expensive

Tourist vessel towed to shore after being stranded on rocks off Phi Phi

A Belgium-registered tourist cruiser got stuck on rocks near Phi Phi Island while travelling from Lanta Island to Phuket early on Monday (November 25). There were no reports of any injuries or death.

 

The Royal Thai Navy’s Region 3 Operational Centre was notified of the incident at 1.45am and dispatched officers to provided assistance.

 

After arriving at the scene, the officers found the bilge of the La Belle Des Ocean was damaged by rocks and sea water was seeping into the vessel. It was carrying 77 passengers and a crew of 80. All passengers are French tourists – 33 males and 44 females – while 60 of the crew are Filipino and 20 Croatian.

 

 

The ship had departed from a port in Singapore and was heading to tourist attractions in the Andaman Sea.

 

With the vessel unable to move, the Navy officers contacted the Sriracha battle ship to tow the cruiser to shore.

 

The towing was done with ease as the water started rising above the rocks in the morning. Both ships reached the Region 3 Operational Centre’s deepwater port in Phuket safely at around 10am.

Ah, Phi Phi. Was stuck there myself a few years ago when the boat left too late and low tide started. The Thai fellas actually got into the water and pulled the boat free with ropes. Took a couple of hours to find a deeper channel so we could get out. I was not impressed.

This must be an extremely frustrating incident for a lot of TVF'ers.

 

Belgian registry.  Filipino and Croation crew.  Rescued by competent Thais without further incident...

 

Still I see that there's some Thai bashing anyway.

PHUKET: All 78 French tourists and one German, as well as the 70-strong crew, aboard the cruise ship La Belle des Océans, which breached its hull on an underground rock southeast of Phi Phi Island early this morning, have been brought to Phuket safely, officials have confirmed.

 

The 4,000-ton Belgium-flagged ship from Brussels arrived at the Phuket Deep Sea Port at about 10am, Phuket Marine Office Director Wiwat Chitchertwong confirmed.

 

The Belle was towed back to Phuket by the HTMS Sriracha, which was dispatched by the Royal Thai Navy Third Area Command at Cape Panwa to render assistance this morning.

Maybe the waters depth is chartered but are the rocks clearly marked?

Since a Belgian made the most important map of the world: Mercator.

85% of accidents at sea are caused by human error and this appears to be another to add to the statistics. It will be up to the Thai Marine Department to carry out an investigation into the cause of the grounding. Hopefully, they will issue a report for public consumption in due course. Until then we should not speculate on the cause(s).

But this is TV, speculation is part of the daily routine, leave us alone ! 

Being a Licensed Captain I can say........running aground with todays technology it is hard to do,  especially in a modern yacht like this with all the bells n whistles of Radar and GPS even at night when you overlay Radar onto GPS its like driving down a runway in the daytime.
