PHUKET:--- A 60-year-old water truck driver escaped serious injury when his 12-wheeled lorry came to a crashing halt in a ditch while on Karon Hill this morning (Dec 4).

The truck skidded out of control and slammed into the ditch near the top of the hill, on the road between Chalong Circle and Karon, at about 7am, explained Capt Channarong Prakongkue of the Karon Police.

No other vehicles were involve in the accident and the driver escaped with only minor injuries, he said.

Strange place to lose control, on top of the hill with just a gentle slope. The steep descent warning  sign is a bit further on. Most vehicles that come to grief on the hill do so further down.

The skid marks started in the center lane and headed left to the ditch.

Maybe too fast ...
Maybe the brakes didn't work ...
Perhaps the driver slept ...
Perhaps due to a sudden stop due to another car ...

On many of our mountain roads in Canada truckers are required to stop at the top, check there brakes, use a low gear, and maintain a very low speed limit while proceeding down the mountain.

I think he was just "not familiar with the road..."

There is a sharp bend coming up there, with many people needing both lanes.

Sounds like he was just driving too fast and realised he was going to hit someone, so tried to rescue.

Hix brakes were locked up all the way to the ditch. No ABS working there. He wasn't in control at that stage.

Speed, faulty brakes, and maybe oncoming or stationary traffic, were probable factors.

The problem is it should of read “water truck driver arrested for dangerous driving and undue care and attention” , but it was the trucks fault .

Electricity was cut in the area and still wasn't back at 9:30 last night. I stayed elsewhere. Hopefully it's back now; I haven't checked.

A full truck like that is very heavy, how could ik skid?

With determination!

Locked brakes, weight and momentum would create a skid.

The water in a 12,000 litre tanker truck would weigh 12 metric tons.

We live downhill from the accident. No loss electric. But cable TV off until about 21.30.

Only the inside tyres locked. He must have been in the outside land. Braked and (I assume) inside brakes locked. Possible brakes faulty.

It seemed to be a fairly small area that was blacked out. Just happened to include my street!

Skid marks tell me a story.

Too fast and sleepy or distracted.

Breaking hard when waking up.
