Gaza rocket sends Netanyahu to shelter during campaign rally - TV

ASHKELON, Israel (Reuters) - A rocket launched from the Gaza Strip at a southern Israeli city on Wednesday as it hosted a campaign rally by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prompted him to take shelter briefly before resuming the event, Israeli TV stations reported.

The Israeli military confirmed the launch against Ashkelon, which is 12 km (7.5 miles) from the coastal Palestinian enclave, and said the rocket was shot down by an Iron Dome air defence interceptor.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility in Gaza, which is under the control of Hamas Islamists and where a smaller armed faction, Islamic Jihad, exchanged fire with Israel during a two-day surge of violence last month.

Israeli TV stations showed Netanyahu, who is campaigning to keep the helm of the conservative Likud party in an internal election on Thursday, being escorted off a stage by bodyguards. The reports said he was taken to a shelter after sirens sounded.

It was the second such incident after a September appearance by Netanyahu in the nearby town of Ashdod was briefly disrupted by a rocket siren.

Israel sparked the November fighting in Gaza by assassinating Baha Abu Al-Atta, an Islamic Jihad commander it accused of ordering the launch against Ashdod.

"He (Al-Atta) is no longer around," a video circulated on social media showed a smiling Netanyahu saying after he retook the stage in Ashkelon, to cheers from onlookers.

In a veiled threat to retaliate for Wednesday's attack, he added: "Whoever tried to make an impression just now should pack his bags."

While Netanyahu is widely expected to retain Likud's leadership, he faces a tough battle ahead of a March general election in Israel - its third in a year, after he and his centrist rival Benny Gantz failed to secure majorities in two previous ballots. Netanyahu's standing has been dented by an indictment on corruption charges that he denies.

Netanyahu's failure to stem attacks from Gaza has been invoked by his political rivals.

"The situation in which Israeli citizens live at the mercy of terrorists and the prime minister of Israel is unable to tour parts of his country is a badge of shame on the security policy in the south - and a loss of deterrence that no sovereign country can accept," Gantz, a former military chief, said in a statement on Wednesday.

So now israel is going to retaliate by sending it's gunships and airplanes to bomb Gaza if it hasn't done that already, tit for tat over and over again, a war that can never ever be won by the Palestinians only to add to their self inflicted misery and poverty to their millions of them who just wishes to live in peace...

But.. as Gaza is a NON-democracy, with only Hamas who has anything to say, there will never be peace.

I remember myself as young student in 1971 as well as businessman, travelling through the entire region, inclusive Golan, West-Bank and Gaza, the border was the same as between the Kingdom of Lanna and the Kingdom of Sukhutai, or... between Netherlands and Belgium: visible maybe at some tourist sites of restaurants...  Tens of thousands had a job OR in Israel or in Israeli of "Western" factories in their own areas. Now.. none, and their places are taken by Philippinos, Vietnamese and a 10.000 or so Thai.

In the 1947049 a 400.000 Palestinians followed the call of their leaders to leave Palestine, so the Arab armies could shoot everyone they saw. Pity, the Israeli’s fought better. These Palestinian Arabs ended in fugitive camps, together with a 300.000 other poor Arabs, and got from the UNWRA a $ 1,3 BILLION a year. We got as thinks… ask yourself at the security check at every airport. The about 700.000 Jews, who had to leave the Arab nations, leaving behind everything they had, got nothing.

How many died from the rocket. Tit for tat would be the same amount.

So, when a terrorist attacks you, but no casualties, only a lot of fear, that is the only thing you will do back ?

To gove an idea about the rocket attacts from Gaza into Israel, for 2019:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Palestinian_rocket_attacks_on_Israel_in_2019

You may very well choose to believe the propaganda tropes straight out of the Zionist apologist play book where Israel can never do any wrong.
However you think 750,000 Palestinians got ethnically cleansed, it is a war crime today not to allow refugees to return to their homes.
Presumably you also believe Palestinians are begging the IDF to demolish their homes in the West Bank to make way for Zionist immigrants straight off the plane at Ben Gurion airport who have never set eyes on the land before.
https://www.972mag.com/demolitions-decade-annexation/

Try Google images: Palestinians ethnically cleansed    where you will find dozens of photos of Jewish terrorist gangs assisting Palestinians to voluntarily flee at the barrel of a gun.

Interestingly 70% of the population of Gaza are refugee families that once lived in Ashkelon and neighboring villages where the OP Netanyahu was speaking, before they were ethnically cleansed that is by European colonizers that is.

So why do they keep shooting the rockets?

Why do they keep killing Jews rather than trying to negotiate a peaceful two-state solution?

btw I believe it is equally a war crime to fire rockets indiscriminately into Israel that could kill innocent people as it is for the IDF with their precision weapons to bomb apartment blocks knowing civilians will be killed, or target Palestinian boys playing football on a beach, or shoot clearly identifiable medics, journalists and paraplegics by the Gaza fence.

No, if Palestinians fire rockets from apartments and hospitals , Israel can fire back at those targets .

If the Palestinians put civilians in the vicinity of their rockets being fired, there will likely be civilian casualties .

Is it a war crime for the Palestinians to use children as a human shield ?

More mythology from the Zionist apologists playbook. The IDF can never do any wrong. The narrative is always so perfect. There's always an excuse for Palestinians hurling themselves in front of Israeli bullets and missiles.

There is nowhere for civilians to hide safely in Gaza less than 4 miles wide in places and about the same size and population of Philadelphia. But that doesn't prevent the IDF regularly "mowing the lawn" as they sickly call it.

Eh, I did not state that the IDF can do no wrong and I am not excusing any things that they do wrong '

It has been clearly shown that the Palestinians deliberately fire rockets from schools and hospitals and they put Children in the vicinity, knowing full well that Israel will fire back, there will be children/civilian casualties and theta will make a got photo shoot and good publicity for their cause .

This is done deliberately as there are fields that they could fire their rockets from. but they choose to use apartments and hospitals to fire from

Easy way to prove or disprove your baloney...independent UN or ICC investigation et al, but Israel of course won't allow investigators to interview their soldiers. The truth will out when some ex IDF with a conscience speak out via groups such as Breaking The Silence, until Netanyahu tries to stifle them.

Methinks the only so called democracy in the Middle east has something to hide.

They could have had a 2 state solution in the 30's getting 80% of the land and the Jews a mere 20%, they rejected it the Jews accepted. Then after ww2 the UN said 50 50, Palestinians rejected that again and twice since. They are NOT interested in a 2 state solution just one state- THEIRS.
