Escaped prisoner sends postcard to prison directors, 'Greetings from Thailand'

After escaping from Belgium's Turnhout Prison in December, former inmate Oualid Sekkaki taunted the facility's directors by sending them a postcard gloating about his successful getaway.

The Brussels Times reported that Sekkaki and four other men made their break from Turnhout on December 19, 2019. The group climbed over the prison's exterior wall and got into a getaway car that was waiting in a nearby street.

Three of the escapees were recaptured the next day, while a fourth enjoyed freedom until early January. Police could not find Sekkaki, however, and the first sign of him came when a letter arrived at Turnhout on Monday.

The envelope contained Sekkaki's prison badge as well as a card with the message "Greetings from Thailand" on it. It is uncertain whether the missive was actually sent from Thailand.

According to De Morgen, Sekkaki was arrested in January 2017 after police pulled his car over on the A12 road. A search of his vehicle revealed 25,000 ecstasy pills. Sekaki was already wanted for questioning in a previous shooting incident.

Maybe he's a candidate for immigration's next biometrics catch, I wouldn't be surprised if Belgium had his fingerprints.

He might as well have turned himself in. They will definitely find him now.

Assuming he got a false passport

Or the SMART car, lol.

Maybe he has no money to stay in Thailand or maybe he has realized that the Belgian prison is much better than outside but he has no money for the return ticket!

In the meantime, the Belgians are convinced that Oualid Sekkaki is just trying to throw them off the scent...  Mind you, he is not the first one: some ten years ago, a Belgian drug dealer and his partners sent a postcard too. They got caught by the RTP in Koh Samui...

There is even room for a laptop in the basket.

What an amateur!

If I were him I would have sent a postcard "Greetings from Istanbul" stuffed in an envelope "Made in China", closed with Finnish reindeer glue and decorated with Japanese "Hello Kitty" stickers, posted from Ulan Bataar with a poste restante return address in Paraguay.

Funny, but if the guy has any brains he would actually be on an entirely different continent. The funny postcard being an attempt to throw the police off his scent.

If he's really in Thailand he's an idiot. He will be caught.

Clever enough to get to Thailand if he has enough money to pay the RTP to stay without and threat of deportation.

If he was clever , he would be in prison to start with.

A friend or acquaintance has taken this stuff to Thailand and sent it to authorities to put them off his scent. He’ll still be in Europe.

Cool hand luke ??

haha good one.  I remember that part in the movie he sent back a post card.  It didn't go well when they re-captured him.  I guess the guards and prison warden did not have a sense of humor

He will return to Belgium and register as a refugee , get 3000 EUR/month and stay in a 5* hotel for free
