Coronavirus = no more china tours in Pattaya next week?

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

According to the last news, it seems China has decided to stop all the tourists tours

from next monday to try to control the spread of the coronavirus.

Some establishments, catered only to this clientele, should be heavily impacted.

''The China Association of Travel Services reports that all tours, including international ones, will be suspended starting Monday.

Domestic group and packaged tours were stopped on Friday.

This affects the vast majority of the tour bus groups that come to Thailand and Pattaya and is sure to have a major effect on the tourist industry in Thailand.''

I'm not one to normally be phased over these types of things and as it stands right now with luck it will fizzle out.....however it appears the real extent of the contagion is being suppressed in China [shouldn't surprise anyone] Some of the video's that are leaking out past the censorship on social media are a bit disturbing. If these clips and images can be believed people are literally just falling over in the street, authorities blocking roads with piled up dirt and officials forcing people into ambulances when they'd prefer not to.

In that particular clip you can hear what is either Chinese celebration fireworks going off in the background or that is gunfire? After saying that I can't imagine many are in the mood for celebrating NY in that region at the moment. Watching this closely.

I'm wondering if this will have an effect on employment in Pattaya.  I'm guessing so.

Chinese tourists contribute very little to the local economy in Pattaya.

False.

Many many more are not coming on tours.  They are mostly younger and staying in ST condos booking off websites. 1000's every week. They do have and are spending money.

Actually older expats contribute much less to the local economy then these Chinese tourists who are not always seeking the cheapest beer in town.

There you go, my first cancellation from China, fortunately we dont have many bookings with Chinese this year just hope it doesn't put other nationalities off coming to Thailand

Your are correct.  They are zero baht tourists.

However, they do create a lot of employment for 300 baht a day Thai's, Burmese etc.  Eg.  room cleaners, kitchen hands etc.

I have noticed the independent Chinese travelers.  Pattaya sees very little money from them also.

Where do you see them spending their money?  I do not see them in shopping malls spending, restaurants, or bars.

I do see them in 7/11's and supermarkets, buying cheap food to cook in the daily rental condo.

The Chinese tour groups remind me of us Brits back in the 60s and 70s on all inclusive tours to Spain ,very little money spent outside in the shops, the Chinese here are mainly the same .

Just look at the literally hundreds of tour buses leaving Jomtien beach between 7am -9am....you may change your opinion

I do look at them and see them being carted to prepaid activities or free activities like clogging Walking Street up without spending 1 sentang.

But its the whole cottage industry, drivers, waiting staff, laundry, chefs, staff at visitor locations...it still brings in massive revenue...and lol at any 7/11 in jomtien between 5-7 pm....absolutely packed as are the restaurants employing Thai nationals

Mate, I applaud your efforts but these are deep, deep seated prejudices and however much you try to drag these people into the reality of 2020, they simply wont listen.

You can't educate pork.

I interpreted this as the Chinese are suspending sales of package tours abroad from tomorrow. I assumed that tours already booked will still be takin gplace but things do get lost in translation, especially with the limited flow of information from China (which actually seems better this time around).

Let's see.

So basically, rather than Thailand saying don't come we cannot risk out country tourism, they still want the Chinese to come and potentially infect their citizens and it's only the Chinese saying no ?

They are not deep seated prejudices.

The tour packages are bought and paid for in China.  Most fly with Chinese airlines.  The buses, hotels, restaurants, are owned or leased by Thai companies, with Chinese owners / nominees.  We have read about raids on such companies here in the past.

What's not owned by the Chinese, they beat the operators down to their rock bottom price, giving them very small margins.

There really is very little money entering the Pattaya economy from the Chinese package holiday groups, and in many cases, profits from them are repatriated back to China.

Hence, the term, "zero baht tourists."

However, they do create employment, but it really only is for your 300 baht a day Thai.  Eg. cleaners, waitresses, cooks.

These lower paid staff, spending some of their their salary in Pattaya, isn't really a huge injection of revenue into the Pattaya economy, and in many cases, some of that salary leaves the Pattaya economy for Issan.

TAT thought that the big numbers would make up for their lower spend, but it hasn't.  Just about everything they can buy here is cheaper to buy back in China, so why would they buy here, including sex?

You may remember the Chinese even built a fake Buddhist temple to take the tourists groups to.

It's now at a point where if they truly enforced the use of Thai company nominees for Chinese ownership, the Chinese tour groups would go elsewhere.  Eg.  Vietnam.

My guess is that the government will give 10% rebate on all Chinese tour sold in Thailand in order to bring more Chinese tourists.

True

they don't even spend money in taxi or bathbus

you can see them everywhere walking in the Pattaya streets

pushing their roll suitcase in front of them from their airnbnb

(Paid directly to the chinese owner) to the bus going back to Bankok airport

(And the same in the other way)

Honestly sometimes i don't even know why they bother to come here

considering they do nothing special except take some free selfies on the

beach at the sunset\sunshine with the big letters Pattaya in the background

or the Hilton Hotel (For future boasting on the social media?)

At least the indians come for the girls

but the chineses? I don't get it

I actually think a lot of the Chinese have been the victim of false advertising.  Pattaya is nothing like what they see in the glossy brochure, particularly the beach.

I understand their excitement.  For many it's their first time in a plane, and their first overseas experience, but many must return home disappointed.

You are right however it's only some specifics venues

which drain all the chinese clientele, like the restaurants on the boats

at the pier, the bus companies which transport them and so on.

Very few Thais in Pattaya can see the money (And usualy it's 300 baht\ day pay

not even sure they are all thais, could be some burmese or cambo)

Chinese don't spread their money all other the city (And i don't talk about the specific

of the bars) like the westerners did. It's why you can see entire parts of the city actualy dying
