No permission from Beijing to evacuate Thais stranded in China

The government of China has not granted Thailand permission to land a plane to evacuate Thais stranded in China after the coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said.

 

The prime minister said that China is still handling the situation while the Thai government has to prepare the list of Thai people in China, an assembly point and departure table before permission is granted.

 

The Thai embassy in China reported that there were no urgent requests to return to Thailand from those who were in China at this moment.

 

The premier asked people to be calm and support the officials to do their jobs effectively, as the government has prepared a plane for a month and the Minister of Foreign Affairs is managing all the processes.

 

Reacting to a question on his reported harsh style in dealing with the media, Prayut said the government does not have enough time to answer all the questions of the press and it was not necessary to publish some details of their work.

The headline is to placate worried relatives, they've not brought their (insert family member here) home yet because they're waiting for permission from Beijing.

 

Reality is they've not even formulated a plan; have no idea who they've got to rescue, let alone organised a date, and set an pick-up point. So how can the Chinese give them a green light?

The evacuation of people from a war or disaster zone is significantly different than from a ‘outbreak’ zone.

 

People should not be evacuated from an outbreak zone, the zone should be quarantined for the benefit of everyone else. 

 

China seems capable of doing this (at least the media have us believe this) in locking down Wuhan and surrounding cities, nothing is of course perfect, but at least ‘most’ of the risk of spread is being minimized. 

 

Thailand has to let China do its job. In the meantime China is well placed to continue on with the types of human rights violations only it is capable of in minimizing the spread of disease: Well at least that the ‘official line’ anyway. I can’t see a Western nation locking down an 11 Million People city so readily. 

 

Its very tough - but no one should be allowed to leave Wuhan until they have been quarantined for a period exceeding the incubation period of this strain of flu. 

 

 

With that said, the regular strain of flu (seasonal flu) kills an estimated 646,000 people world wide each year.

So, how much more serious is this strain? Its new, but it seems there is a lot of media scare mongering going on.

I think China are absolutely right to do this. Anyway, for Thailand this is what happens when you become a little part of the big wheel (e.g - China).

 

They tell you what to do and you have to suck it up. I bet little P is now getting used to being told what to do on a regular basis both inside and outside of Thailand.

Whatever the correct answer is, China hasn't given permission and therefore Prayut cannot just fly in and retrieve Thai nationals. 

 

UK is also having similar problems with hundreds of UK nationals at Unis in Wusan.

 

Or, as in your post, since when can you just fly your aircraft into another country and expect all your subjects just to be there?
